Description
This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, Online Auction - 29th October on Thursday the 29th of October, Online. Estimated price: GBP 25,000 - GBP 28,000. Background:
Few vehicles have enjoyed the longevity, recognition and enduring appeal of the Land Rover Defender. Its origins can be traced back to the original Series I of 1948, with the familiar coil-sprung 90 and 110 models arriving in 1983 and evolving into the Defender range in 1990. Throughout its development, the fundamental principles remained largely unchanged, combining a robust ladder-frame chassis, permanent four-wheel drive, a dual-range transfer box and exceptional off-road capability.
By 2011, the Defender had benefited from decades of gradual refinement whilst retaining much of the character that made it so distinctive. The introduction of the 2.4-litre Ford-derived Puma turbodiesel engine in 2007 brought improved performance and refinement, together with a six-speed manual gearbox offering more relaxed cruising and a particularly low first gear for demanding off-road conditions.
The XS specification represented one of the more comprehensively equipped versions of the traditional Defender, adding a welcome degree of comfort and convenience to its fundamentally utilitarian design. With its compact dimensions, short wheelbase and excellent approach and departure angles, the Defender 90 remained particularly well suited to both rural estate duties and more challenging terrain.
The Car:
Dating from 2011, this Defender 90 XS has enjoyed low ownership and was indicating 80,981 miles at the time of cataloguing. Interestingly, the Defender's first owner was the proprietor of Cerney Motor Services, who maintained the vehicle fastidiously throughout his ownership. When the Defender was sold, it continued to be maintained by the same garage, providing a reassuring degree of continuity in its mechanical care, as reflected in the accompanying service history.
It was subsequently acquired by a private estate, where it has seen relatively light use. Between March 2025 and October 2026, for example, the recorded mileage increased by just 1,907 miles, illustrating its limited use during this period.
It's finished in Orkney Grey Metallic and sits on Land Rover Boost alloy wheels fitted with Continental tyres. As an XS model, it benefits from a higher level of factory equipment than the more utilitarian versions, including additional sound insulation, carpeting, heated front seats, enhanced interior trim, and a Sony audio system, all contributing to a more comfortable and refined driving experience. The standard four-seat configuration incorporates forward-facing rear seats with three-point seat belts, providing useful passenger accommodation whilst retaining the practicality associated with these cars
.
Importantly, the Defender is accompanied by a detailed maintenance history, predominantly with Cerney Motor Services, documenting regular servicing and significant mechanical expenditure over a number of years. This includes an engine replacement undertaken by Grange Land Rover in 2016 and a replacement turbocharger in August 2024.
Documented Maintenance History, including servicing:
November 2012 - 7,585 miles – Service - Cerney Motor Services
November 2014 – 18,663 miles – Service – Cerney Motor Services

September 2018 – 40,649 miles – Service – Cerney Motor Services
October 2019 – 49,509 miles – Service – Cerney Motor Services

August 2024 – 77,257 miles – Turbocharger replacement – Cerney Motor Services
March 2025 – 79,074 miles – Pre-sale preparation – Cerney Motor Services
October 2026 – 80,981 miles – Service scheduled on the day of the auction by Cerney Motor Services
Condition:
The Defender presents well overall, with some minor age-related imperfections, including light bubbling around the window frame joints and Alpine windows, together with a few small paintwork nicks consistent with its 15 years of use.
In addition to its documented maintenance history, it has benefited from attention to the bearings, brakes, steering components, suspension, door seals and cam cover gasket. The indicated mileage at the time of cataloguing was 80,981 and it's scheduled to receive a fresh service from Cerney Motor Services on the day of the auction, providing additional reassurance to its next custodian. Supplied with both keys and the current MOT Certificate which is valid until 14th April 2027.
With its factory XS specification, standard four-seat arrangement and documented maintenance history, this Defender 90 offers an appealing combination of traditional Land Rover character and everyday usability. Its low ownership, continuity of maintenance with Cerney Motor Services and relatively light private-estate use add further interest to this well-equipped example.
