Description
Background:
Introduced in 1999, the Mercedes-Benz CL-Class (C215) represented the two-door coupé interpretation of the flagship S-Class, combining its engineering sophistication and luxury with elegant pillarless bodywork and a distinctly sporting character.
Replacing the substantial C140 coupé, the new CL was lighter, more contemporary and considerably more technologically advanced. Its equipment included Mercedes-Benz's innovative Active Body Control (ABC) suspension, designed to minimise body movement whilst maintaining the ride comfort expected of the marque's flagship grand tourer.
The CL500 was powered by Mercedes-Benz' highly-regarded 5.0-litre M113 V8, producing 306bhp and driving the rear wheels through a five-speed automatic transmission. Renowned for its durability and smooth power delivery, the naturally-aspirated V8 was particularly well suited to the CL's effortless long-distance touring character.
More than a quarter of a century later, the C215 remains an impressive motor car, combining traditional Mercedes-Benz luxury with a level of technology and equipment that was remarkable for its time.
The Car:
Originally supplied new to Japan in June 2000, this attractive CL500 is finished in the rarely encountered shade of Neve White, complemented by an Anthracite Exclusive leather interior.
Having spent its first 17 years in Japan, the car was imported into the UK in August 2017, at which point it had covered 51,930 kilometres, equivalent to just 32,267 miles. At the time of cataloguing, the odometer indicated 45,380 miles, a figure supported by extensive documentation, including Japanese import records and a clear VX report. Recorded as Grade 4 at auction in Japan, the VX report confirms no recorded accident damage, contamination or outstanding finance.
The comprehensive service history details considerable recent attention, most notably on 21st May 2026 at 45,374 miles, when the car received an engine service together with replacement of the auxiliary drive belt, idler pulley and nearside front ball joint. The air-conditioning system was also re-gassed to its specified 950g capacity. An MOT was completed at the same time, resulting in a first-time pass.
Our vendor reports that the car drives exceptionally well, with the sophisticated ABC suspension functioning correctly and the various electrical and comfort features operating as intended.
Specification:
Already generously equipped as standard, this particular CL500 benefits from a desirable selection of factory options, including:
Further equipment includes automatic climate control, automatic headlights and windscreen wipers, automatically dimming mirrors, cruise control, electrically adjustable steering column, satellite navigation, television function and voice control.
The only modification from factory specification is a set of 20-inch Brabus-style alloy wheels fitted with Pirelli tyres, although a set of original wheels is also available should the next owner prefer a more traditional appearance.
Condition:
Described by our vendor as presenting particularly well, this CL500 has benefited from spending much of its life in Japan, with the bodywork reported to be free from the corrosion that can affect examples of this generation.
The Neve White paintwork remains attractive, with only minor marks and imperfections consistent with its age. The alloy wheels would benefit from some cosmetic refurbishment, with replacement wheel bolts and centre caps due to be fitted.
Inside, the Anthracite Exclusive leather upholstery and Alcantara headlining remain a particular highlight, creating an appropriately luxurious environment.
Accompanying the Mercedes are its original literature, owner's manuals, specification sheets and two keys, together with a substantial history folder containing servicing documentation, maintenance invoices, Japanese import records and clear HPI and VX reports.
With its low verified mileage, extensive documented history, desirable factory specification and distinctive colour combination, this is a particularly appealing example of the C215 CL500, offering the smooth performance of Mercedes-Benz's 5.0-litre V8 and the elegance of its pillarless coupé bodywork in a well-maintained and attractively presented package.
