1996 HONDA NSX

Honda’s engineering brief for their ‘New Experimental Sportscar’ was to provide the ultimate balance between performance and usability. Having achieved this to universal acclaim, the ‘NSX-R’ was intended as the ultimate driver-focussed version of this iconic model.

An uncompromising engineering approach was taken for the Type-R which extended beyond specification. Weight-saving measures included the deletion of sound insulation and other comfort-oriented equipment shaving over 120Kgs from the standard model. Together with additional lightweight components, revised suspension and chassis enhancements, the resulting car offered a purity of response that has subsequently established the NSX Type-R as one of the most revered Japanese performance cars of its era.

Created entirely for the Japanese domestic market, this 1996 model is example #0447 of just 483 NSX-R’s to have been produced.

Having first been registered in Japan in June 1996 before being privately imported to the UK in February 2016, the Type-R was purchased by the current owner in July 2016 where it has since formed part of a significant private collection for over ten years.

Finished in the desirable combination of original White painted bodywork with a gloss black painted roof and lightweight forged alloy wheels finished in white. The interior features lightweight carbon-Kevlar Recaro bucket seats trimmed in black with red stitching and black lightweight carpets. Featuring the NSX Type-R specific Momo leather-bound steering wheel, sculpted titanium gear knob, carbon fibre instrument cluster with yellow needles, the car’s speedometer now reads in mph. It is accompanied by the original NSX-R owner’s manual and handbooks, spare keys and history file dating back to its early life in Japan, together with the original jack, tool kit, tyre inflator and spare space-saver alloy wheel.

Having covered a total of 50,800 miles from new, the Type-R benefits from a complete and fully documented Honda service history carried out whilst both in the UK and Japan. The current owner has meticulously compiled an extensive and impressive history file which comprises invoices and records for all work carried out. In addition, the owner has also maintained a detailed record of each journey and mile completed throughout his decade of ownership.

Regarded today as one of the most significant Japanese performance cars of its generation, the NSX Type-R represents the purest expression of Honda’s pioneering mid-engined sports car.
