EXTERIOR

The E39 was built to be driven rather than tucked away, and most have spent the past two decades doing exactly that. Six-figure mileages are now commonplace, making an M Sport with just 43k miles an increasingly unusual find. Its clean proportions, understated sporting details and timeless styling have aged remarkably well, retaining much of the appeal that made the E39 such a success in the first place.

The paintwork remains consistent throughout, with only a handful of minor stone chips to the front end. The Shadowline window surrounds have escaped much of the fading commonly associated with these models, while the glass and facelift headlights retain their clarity without the clouding or discolouration so often seen with age.

INTERIOR

One of this M Sport’s more distinctive features is its rarely seen Alcantara and Velour upholstery, a particularly appealing combination that brings a sporting character to the cabin without compromising on comfort. Both front and rear seats show no noticeable bolster wear, while the surrounding trim, carpets and boot compartment have been carefully preserved.

The dashboard retains its familiar BMW layout, with the displays remaining free from the pixel deterioration so commonly associated with E39s. A neatly integrated Kenwood DAB head unit was fitted following the car’s arrival in the UK, introducing some welcome modern functionality while sitting comfortably within the existing dashboard aperture.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Beneath the bonnet sits BMW’s much-admired M54 straight-six, an engine celebrated for its smooth power delivery, robust engineering and enduring reputation. With ample torque for effortless motorway cruising and a willingness to rev when called upon, it delivers the engaging yet relaxed character for which BMW’s six-cylinder saloons have become so highly regarded.

The gearbox complements the engine beautifully, with smooth shifts and a well-matched delivery that makes the E39 equally enjoyable on longer journeys or more spirited drives.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The distinctive M Sport alloy wheels provide a fitting complement to the E39’s restrained styling, their unmarked finish completing its smart exterior appearance. All four are fitted with matching Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres, each retaining generous tread depth.

Braking performance was equally reassuring during our previous inspection, with a strong, progressive feel on the road and ample material remaining across both discs and pads.

HISTORY FILE

First supplied by Murauchi BMW in April 2002, this E39 spent almost two decades in Japan before arriving in the UK in June 2021.

Benefiting from a particularly consistent maintenance history, the car was serviced annually by its supplying BMW dealership throughout its early life, with later attention entrusted to Japanese specialist Minami Auto. Following its arrival in the UK, the car underwent a comprehensive inspection before being sold to its current owner.
