Some cars earn their significance through competition success, others through technical innovation. The Porsche 911 R secured its place by reminding enthusiasts precisely what they valued about driving. Unveiled at Geneva in 2016, it combined the engineering of Porsche’s contemporary GT department with a six-speed manual gearbox, lightweight construction and deliberately restrained styling. At a time when outright performance increasingly depended upon turbocharging and automated transmissions, its appeal was immediate.

The name recalled the pioneering 911 R of 1967, a lightweight competition machine associated with rallies, endurance records and the Targa Florio. Almost half a century later, Porsche revived that philosophy for a road car developed by its motorsport department. Production was restricted to just 991 examples worldwide, ensuring that the modern 'R' would remain a distinct and unusually focused chapter in the continuing 911 story.

Its specification brought together some particularly desirable ingredients. The chassis and much of its exterior treatment were closely related to the contemporary GT3, whilst its naturally-aspirated 4-litre flat-six was shared with GT3 RS. Crucially, Porsche paired that engine with a six-speed manual transmission, giving buyers the opportunity to enjoy its considerable capabilities through three pedals and a conventional gear lever.

With approximately 493bhp available, the R possessed performance comfortably worthy of its ancestry, yet its attraction extended well beyond acceleration figures. The relationship between throttle, engine speed, clutch and gear selection placed the driver at the centre of the experience. Each change demanded participation, the rising crescendo from the flat-six rewarded it, and even an ordinary journey offered opportunities to appreciate the care invested in its development.

Weight reduction was integral to the model’s character. Carbon-fibre panels, a magnesium roof, reduced insulation and the omission of rear seats contributed to a quoted weight of 1,370kg, some 50kg below the contemporary GT3 RS. The absence of a large fixed rear wing gave the R a discreet(ish) appearance, allowing its engineering to provide the drama.

The example offered here is finished in Pure White with factory-specified green stripes and wheels painted in satin platinum, a combination that suits the R’s purposeful shape and historical associations particularly well. Its defining distinction, however, is its delivery mileage, with just 41 miles indicated at the time of cataloguing. It represents an opportunity to acquire a scarcely used example of a model already firmly established within significant Porsche collections, and potentially amongst the lowest-mileage examples currently available.

Importantly, this car was specified with the highly desirable single-mass flywheel. An option particularly appreciated by enthusiasts seeking the fullest expression of the R’s character, its reduced rotational inertia sharpens the engine’s response and eagerness to change speed. In a car conceived around direct driver involvement, this is an especially appropriate addition, complementing the manual transmission and naturally aspirated engine rather than simply adding another item to the equipment list.

The confirmed options also include the useful front-axle lifting system and Sport Chrono Package, incorporating the Porsche Track Precision App and preparation for a lap trigger. Porsche Communication Management with navigation, mobile telephone preparation and Online Services were also specified, together with floor mats. These additions provide a welcome measure of everyday convenience alongside the car’s more focused mechanical specification.

The wider collecting landscape provides an interesting context. As attention turns towards cars offering distinctive mechanical experiences, buyers are increasingly considering which modern models deserve a lasting place alongside established collector favourites. The Ferrari F50 and Enzo illustrate the importance collectors attach to a clearly defined identity and a memorable place within their manufacturer’s history. The 911 R has its own persuasive credentials: limited production, motorsport engineering and a driving experience shaped around human participation.

For somebody assembling a collection of landmark modern Porsches, the R offers a compelling combination of rarity, engineering pedigree and recognisable identity. This delivery-mileage example adds a striking colour scheme and the sought-after flywheel option to that already persuasive foundation. Whether appreciated as a carefully preserved collection piece or enjoyed for the qualities that inspired its creation, it presents a rare opportunity to secure one of the defining driver’s Porsches of its generation.
