Description
Few British manufacturers inspired quite the same loyalty as TVR. Independent in outlook and individual in execution, the Blackpool company built cars for enthusiasts who valued performance, character and a direct connection with the machinery. Its fortunes may have fluctuated, but the appeal of its Peter Wheeler-era sports cars remains easy to understand: muscular styling, lightweight construction and an unmistakable soundtrack.
The Chimaera brought those qualities to a broader audience, combining the Griffith’s sporting foundations with a more accommodating approach to touring. Its curvaceous glass-fibre body concealed a tubular steel chassis, whilst a removable roof panel added open-air versatility and It became TVR’s most prolific model, demonstrating that comfort and practicality could sit comfortably alongside the marque’s traditional sporting priorities.
In 400 specification, the Rover-derived 4.0-litre V8 was quoted at 240bhp, driving the rear wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox. With relatively little weight to propel, contemporary figures suggested 0–60mph in approximately 5.1 seconds and a maximum speed of around 152mph. Equally appealing was the engine’s generous torque, providing accessible performance without requiring constant excursions towards the rev limit.
There was individuality in the details, too. Rather than interrupting the bodywork with conventional exterior handles, the later Chimaera’s doors were released by buttons beneath the door mirrors, a small but memorable introduction to TVR ownership. Inside, traditional walnut trim and clear analogue instruments created a recognisably British sports car environment. These touches remain part of the attraction for enthusiasts drawn to the company’s distinctive approach.
Delivered to its first owner on 1st September 2000, this particular Chimaera has seen remarkably little use. Its service book records attention in September 2001 at 1,067 miles, followed by a further stamp in November 2002 at 3,997 miles. The modest increase since that second entry provides a telling illustration of how little road use it has experienced during the intervening years.
Known to us from its previous appearance at auction in 2023, when it first emerged from long-term storage, the car has subsequently benefited from recommissioning arranged by our vendor. This included a full service, new battery and four Falken tyres and we understand that it received its first-ever MOT in spring 2026, marking a significant step after a life spent predominantly off the road.
Now indicating just 4,346 miles, this Chimaera offers an unusual opportunity to acquire a minimally used example of one of TVR’s defining models. Its appeal lies as much in the character of the car as its mileage: V8 performance, a manual gearbox and the individuality that continues to sustain such affection for the Blackpool marque.
