This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, The Iconic Sale at the NEC Classic Motor Show 2026 on Saturday the 14th of November, NEC, Birmingham, B40 1NT. Estimated price: GBP 26,000 - GBP 30,000.

Few cars have crossed the boundaries between motoring, fashion and popular culture as successfully as the Mini. By the late 1990s, its place as a British design icon was firmly established, making a collaboration with English fashion designer, Paul Smith a particularly appropriate partnership. Both were internationally recognised British names, combining practical thinking with an individual sense of style, and the resulting limited edition brought a fresh interpretation to the familiar Mini shape.

Introduced in 1998, the Paul Smith edition was limited to 1,800 examples worldwide, with just 300 allocated to the UK. Its significance extended beyond the addition of a designer’s signature. Smith’s involvement gave the car a carefully considered identity, using distinctive colours, materials and small, unexpected details to create something recognisably different whilst retaining the simplicity and character that had made the Mini so enduring.

UK examples were finished in exclusive Paul Smith Blue, complemented by charcoal-grey 12-inch Minilite-style alloy wheels, body-coloured wheelarch extensions and twin auxiliary driving lamps. A special bonnet badge and discreet Paul Smith branding completed an exterior treatment that was noticeably more restrained than some of the sporting editions of the period.

Inside, black leather upholstery provided a more luxurious setting than the standard Mini, accompanied by a colour-matched dashboard and instruments with bespoke graphics and Paul Smith’s signature. Perhaps the most characteristic touches were those initially hidden from view: vivid citrus-green finishes within the glovebox and luggage compartment, on the fuel tank and beneath the bonnet. These playful contrasts reflected the designer’s reputation for introducing unexpected colour into otherwise understated designs.

Power comes from Rover’s 1,275cc multi-point fuel-injected four-cylinder engine, driving the front wheels through a four-speed manual gearbox. The familiar mechanical layout and compact proportions ensure that, beneath its distinctive detailing, the Paul Smith retains the engaging character of the classic Mini.

This 1999 example is understood to have remained within one family for approximately its first twenty years. Our vendor acquired it in 2022 for his personal collection of Minis, where it has formed part of a group assembled through an enthusiasm for the marque and its many variations.

Indicating fewer than 7,000 miles at the time of cataloguing, it presents very well in the model’s signature blue over black leather. Its modest recorded use is a particular attraction, adding interest to an edition already distinguished by its limited production and recognisable specification. In storage recently so will require an MOT before returning to the road.

The appeal of the Paul Smith Mini lies in the completeness of the collaboration. Its colours, trim and detailing tell a coherent story, linking one of Britain’s best-known cars with an influential figure in British fashion. For collectors, that combination gives it an identity beyond the usual special-edition badges and graphics. This low-mileage example offers an appealing opportunity to acquire one of the more individual late-production Minis, and we encourage your inspection.
