Some cars make their presence felt before their specification is even considered. This BMW M3 is one such example. Finished in the strikingly unusual BMW Individual 'Coloured Gold Metallic', it brings considerable visual theatre to one of BMW M’s most admired designs. For the enthusiast seeking an E46 that will stand apart at a gathering of the marque, this is an intriguing proposition.

Introduced at the turn of the millennium, the E46-generation M3 combined muscular proportions with the everyday usability that had become central to the model’s appeal. Its widened wheelarches, sculpted bonnet, distinctive side vents and four exhaust outlets gave it a purposeful identity, whilst its compact dimensions helped create a car equally suited to an engaging country-road drive or a longer journey.

At its heart lies the naturally aspirated 3.2-litre S54 straight-six, producing 343 PS, approximately 338 bhp, and 365 Nm of torque. Its appetite for revs, distinctive soundtrack and responsive delivery remain central to the E46 experience. Rear-wheel drive, a variable-locking M differential and carefully developed suspension complete a package whose appeal extends well beyond its performance figures.

This example features the six-speed SMG II transmission, an automated manual gearbox with electrohydraulic clutch operation and gear selection through the steering-wheel paddles or centre-console lever. It offers an engaging, distinctly period interpretation of paddle-shift performance, with no clutch pedal for the driver to operate.

The defining feature, however, is its colour. The reported factory BMW Individual label carries the chassis reference PP87426, the description ‘Coloured Gold Metallic’, code S04/2 and the additional wording ‘Fueller Titansilber’. This records a particularly unusual Individual paint specification, entirely in keeping with the programme’s purpose of allowing customers to personalise their BMW beyond the standard catalogue.

Our vendor believes this may be the only E46 M3 in this colour in the UK. Whilst we cannot verify that assertion, its unusual specification was precisely what attracted them when they acquired the car for their private collection in January 2014. It indicated just 21,412 miles at that point and now displayed 23,165 miles at the time of cataloguing, an increase of only 1,753 miles during their ownership.

The exterior is further distinguished by a Clubsport-style rear spoiler, described by our vendor as factory-specified, which adds another conspicuous element to an already memorable configuration. Inside, heated black Nappa leather upholstery provides a restrained contrast to the gold paintwork, whilst the specified Harman Kardon audio system adds to the cabin’s appeal. Together, these features suggest an owner who wanted both a distinctive appearance and the comfort expected of a well-equipped M3.

Such an unusual factory colour gives this car an additional point of interest for collectors. Any premium will ultimately be determined by bidders, but the combination of Individual specification, very low indicated mileage and lengthy collection ownership provides a compelling basis for consideration.

This is certainly no M3 for a shrinking violet. Whether parked amongst more conventionally finished examples or arriving at a BMW gathering, it is unlikely to pass unnoticed. For somebody assembling a collection of significant BMWs, or simply seeking an E46 M3 with a particularly expressive personality, this Coloured Gold Metallic Coupé deserves close attention.
