Description
Cadillac built its reputation on precision engineering under Henry Leland. Introduced in 1908, the Model 30 combined four-cylinder performance with controlled production costs, establishing a foundation for increasingly refined successors.
By 1914, its four-cylinder engine displaced 5,996cc, whilst a Timken two-speed rear axle provided six forward ratios in conjunction with the three-speed gearbox. Electric starting, introduced by Cadillac for 1912, further enhanced usability. This example benefits from both features.
Bearing engine number 94737, this Five Passenger Touring Car was discovered by its present private owner whilst living and working in the United States around 2009. It is understood to have been found in a container around 2004–2005, having reportedly remained unused since approximately the 1920s. Photographs recording its condition as found accompany the car.
An extensive mechanical restoration was entrusted to early Cadillac specialist George Kaforski of Ohio. Completed in 2010 after approximately one year, the work is supported by detailed notes, receipts and photographs. Further attention was provided by Evan Ide’s Massachusetts workshop. The interior was retrimmed in black button-back leather, whilst the paintwork, believed by the vendor to be its factory finish, was retained.
A new black canvas hood, hood envelope, full tonneau and fitted rear carpet were also supplied. Following completion, the Cadillac successfully participated in several north-eastern American club rallies, including a Friends of Ancient Road Transportation tour, helping to run in the rebuilt engine.
Previously California-registered as 6RAH026, it was shipped to Britain as a personal import in July 2012 following the owner’s relocation. It has not been UK registered, but NOVA documentation and shipping and import paperwork accompany it.
NP Veteran Engineering subsequently prepared the Cadillac for Veteran Car Club rallies and tours, including the 2015 Biarritz to Caen tour. Having successfully crossed the Pyrenees, it was subsequently driven from Portsmouth’s ferry terminal to Kent.
In 2019, the wheels were professionally rebuilt with new wood and tyres, the gearbox rebuilt and brakes relined. The vendor reports approximately £50,000 expenditure during ownership and an estimated 4,000 miles since the 2010 mechanical restoration.
Last driven in 2020 without reported issues, it was then stored in the vendor’s car barn. Recently, the old fuel was drained and replenished, and the spark plugs and ignition points cleaned. The engine fired using external 6-volt batteries; those fitted would not accept sufficient charge and require replacement. The vendor also suspects the fuel line needs clearing. Recommissioning is required before active use. The electric starting system and two-speed rear axle reportedly functioned when last used.
Accompanying items include an original instruction book, Cadillac jack, tool roll, two inner tubes, fitted tyre compressor, receipts, care and running instructions, starting guidance and photographs. Its restoration and touring history provide an appealing basis for a return to Edwardian motoring, and we encourage inspection of the car and accompanying documentation prior to bidding.
