1974 PORSCHE CARRERA TARGA

The 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 Targa MFI is a highly coveted, low-production 911 renowned for carrying the 210-horsepower, mechanical fuel-injected engine from the legendary 1973 Carrera RS inside the, then-new 'G-Series' impact-bumper body. Globally, it remains an incredibly rare variant, with Porsche producing only 423 Targas for the 1974 model year.

This ultra rare, UK-delivered Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 MFI Targa is accompanied by a splendidly detailed timeline and comprehensive maintenance record from the day it was ordered new through Porsche Dealer, Rob Walkers on 23-10-1973. The history file contains a delivery note from Dependable Deliveries Ltd. showing it transported the 911 to Porsche Cars GB in Isleworth from Folkestone on 28/05/1974. Duly invoiced at £6531.45 from PCGB (AFN) on June 4th, it was on its way to Jones Garage, St Saviour in Jersey to its first owner and was registered as J1704 on 13/06/1974. The Porsche Letter of Authenticity shows an exterior colour of Royal Purple/341 with Midnight Leatherette and Tweed and Twill interior. Selected options included Black Trims in Chrome and Chrome Headlight Rings.

In 1976, it returned to the UK and was registered LBB 535P but it was not until 1982 that it came under the servicing stewardship of the renowned Porsche experts Autofarm Ltd. for the next five years. Most of the work, all invoiced in the history file, shows basic servicing and consumables and its not until July 1985 that the engine received a full top-end rebuild with the mileage at 109,834. The file contains a full account of all part used and is beautifully handwritten.

In October 1990 a full restoration was undertaken by Hi-Tec Bodystyle Bicester replacing any corroded panels where necessary and presenting the Carrera to neighbours, Bob Watson Engineering, to complete the mechanical suspension restoration which is fully catalogued and extensive. The body colour was now Porsche Sea Blue (Germany 329). An MOT from November 1992 confirms the mileage at 116,129. Further work in 1993 shows two new rear wheels bearings fitted and fine tuning by G-Force Motorsport. In 1995 at 112,785 miles, it received the first of three services by All Porsche Plus with the final one in September 1999 at 128,444 miles.

In May 2002 it had a bottom end rebuild including all bearings, oil pump, LH camshaft and rockers. The gearbox was also fully rebuilt with new parts as required and all work completed by Steve Bull. In 2003, Southbound Motor Trimmers carried out a full interior refurbishment with full Metropole Blue leather front and rear seats with perforated centres, blue carpets, door bins, B pillars, wheel arch panels, rear deck and Targa Roof. Between 2003/2008, GT One Ltd. of Surrey carried out three services before the Porsche was back on its way to France with the registration 8796 YX 56. Invoices in the file show work conducted by OPC Lorient France till 2014 when it returned to the UK and was reunited with its old UK registration, LBB 535P. Multiple invoices show that the car was maintained and serviced by Williams Crawford from 2014/2023 before being sold to our vendor at 145,173 miles.

Matching numbers and basically mechanically a 2.7 RS, which explains the amount of driving mileage and pleasure this Porsche Targa has bestowed upon its owners, here’s hoping the next custodian does the same. Supplied with an extraordinary level of history for such a well-travelled 911, unrepeatable early correspondence, its service book, and the option of either its original Duck Tail spoiler or the later Whale Tail.
