Description
Subaru has a long history of successful collaborations with some of the most respected names in performance engineering. Its partnership with Prodrive brought remarkable success on the world rally stage and ultimately gave rise to the celebrated Impreza P1, whilst Litchfield further explored the marque's performance potential with its Type 25. In 2010, Subaru joined forces with another legendary British engineering company, Cosworth, to create one of the most exclusive and accomplished road-going Imprezas ever produced, the WRX STI Cosworth CS400.
Based on the third-generation Impreza hatchback, introduced at the New York Motor Show in April 2007, the CS400 represented a significant development of the standard WRX STI. With just 75 examples produced exclusively for the UK market, it combined Cosworth's considerable engineering expertise with Subaru's proven four-wheel-drive platform. The resulting performance was remarkable, with 400bhp on offer and a claimed 0-60mph time of just 3.7 seconds, a standing quarter-mile in 12.75 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 155mph. To put those figures into perspective, the CS400 was only half a second slower to 60mph than the contemporary 572bhp Audi RS6.
Cosworth extensively reworked the turbocharged 2.5-litre flat-four, incorporating forged pistons, uprated connecting rods and bearings, strengthened cylinder heads, improved head gaskets and studs, together with a bespoke exhaust system. An uprated clutch and carbon synchronisers were also fitted to accommodate the additional performance. Chassis development was equally comprehensive, with Eibach springs, specially calibrated Bilstein dampers and revised suspension bushings, whilst braking was entrusted to AP Racing 355mm ventilated front discs with six-piston calipers. Lightweight 18-inch Racing Dynamics Pro-Race alloy wheels completed the mechanical upgrades.
Externally, the CS400 retained much of the familiar Impreza silhouette, with subtle enhancements including Zunsport mesh grilles and Xenon headlights. Inside, the cabin received leather upholstery with contrasting stitching, Cosworth embroidery to the front seats and dashboard, and individually numbered sill plates, providing a discreet reminder of the car's limited-production status.
First registered in 2010, the example offered here is number #14 of the 75 cars, having had just one former registered keeper and remaining in its current ownership since 2012. Finished in Dark Grey, one of only three colours available alongside Spark Silver and San Remo Red, it features a black leather interior with contrasting white stitching, Cosworth logos embroidered into the front seats and dashboard, and its individual build number displayed on the driver's sill.
The accompanying service book records an extensive maintenance history, with an initial safety inspection and 13 subsequent service entries spanning March 2011 to October 2025. Early servicing was undertaken by Subaru dealers and independent garages, whilst from 2017 onwards the car has benefited from a particularly consistent relationship with Subaru dealer Drive In Autocentres of Halesowen, responsible for its annual servicing throughout this period. The recorded mileage progresses steadily from 1,185 miles at the initial inspection in March 2011 to 34,461 miles at the most recent service in October 2025. Indicating just 34,496 miles at the time of cataloguing, the car has covered only 35 miles since that service. A further service and fresh MOT will be undertaken prior to the sale, adding to the car's already extensive maintenance history.
With its limited production, extensive Cosworth engineering and unmistakable Subaru character, the CS400 occupies a particularly interesting position in the history of the Impreza. Having remained with its current owner for some 14 years, with just one former registered keeper and an accompanying service history demonstrating consistent maintenance, number #14 offers an appealing opportunity for the Subaru enthusiast or collector seeking something considerably rarer than the more familiar WRX STI.
