Few cars have enjoyed the enduring popularity and affection afforded to the original Mini. Introduced in 1959 and designed by Sir Alec Issigonis, its revolutionary transverse-engine, front-wheel-drive layout transformed small-car design, providing remarkable interior space within exceptionally compact dimensions. Its distinctive styling, entertaining driving characteristics and unmistakable personality quickly established the Mini as one of Britain's most successful and recognisable motoring icons.
The arrival of the Mini Cooper in 1961, developed in collaboration with racing car constructor John Cooper, added a sporting dimension to the already successful formula. With increased performance, improved braking and a more purposeful character, the Cooper soon established an enviable reputation, further enhanced by the Mini's remarkable achievements in international rallying, including its celebrated victories on the Monte Carlo Rally.
Following the original Cooper's discontinuation in the early 1970s, the name returned in 1990, initially as a limited-production model before becoming a permanent fixture in the Mini range. By the late 1990s, the Rover Mini had benefited from considerable development whilst retaining the essential character and appearance of the original design.
The introduction of the revised Mini range in 1996 brought significant improvements, most notably the adoption of a 1,275cc fuel-injected A-Series engine, together with a front-mounted radiator, revised interior, driver's airbag and additional safety features. The Cooper continued to represent the sporting side of the range, distinguished from the standard Mini by a shorter 3.21:1 final drive ratio, compared with the standard 2.76:1, providing livelier acceleration, together with a factory-fitted engine oil cooler.
Its sporting character was reflected in the exterior detailing, with a contrasting roof, matching bonnet stripes, auxiliary driving lamps and distinctive 12-inch, eight-spoke Minilite-style alloy wheels recalling the Cooper's celebrated rallying heritage. Inside, the later models offered a considerably more upmarket environment, featuring a burr walnut veneer dashboard with cream-faced instruments, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and sports seats upholstered in contrasting cream and black leather.
The Car:
Dating from 1998, this Rover Mini Cooper is a particularly interesting example by virtue of its exceptionally low recorded mileage, indicating just 3,645 miles from new at the time of cataloguing. Now in its fifth ownership, with four former registered keepers, the car has been preserved as a collector's piece rather than used for regular everyday motoring.
Believed to be finished in Nightfire Red (CAQ), the Mini is described as entirely original, retaining the distinctive exterior detailing and well-appointed interior associated with the late-production Cooper. Its exceptionally limited use over the past 28 years makes it an increasingly unusual survivor, particularly given the popularity of these cars as everyday transport during their early lives.
Powered by the familiar 1,275cc fuel-injected A-Series engine, coupled to a four-speed manual gearbox, the Cooper offered an entertaining combination of responsive performance, precise handling and remarkable manoeuvrability. Its compact dimensions, low driving position and unmistakable character continue to make these cars particularly enjoyable.
Although the original service book and accompanying pack are no longer present, the car has recently benefited from servicing and mechanical attention. An invoice from Carnforth Service & MOT Centre, dated 20th August 2026 and recording 3,645 miles, documents an engine oil and filter change, replacement air filter and four new spark plugs. Further work included lubrication and general checks, together with a new handbrake cable and battery.
Condition:
Having been retained as a collector's piece, this Mini Cooper is described as remaining in entirely original condition, with exceptionally limited use throughout its life. The indicated mileage of just 3,645 miles is particularly noteworthy for a car approaching three decades old. Although currently declared SORN, the Mini benefits from an MOT valid until 20th August 2027 and was recently serviced in August 2026 at 3,645 miles. Our vendor advises that the only known imperfection is an inoperative fuel gauge. The recent servicing and mechanical attention provide useful evidence of maintenance, although prospective purchasers should satisfy themselves as to the car's overall condition and readiness for regular road use following its period of storage.
With production of the original Mini ending in October 2000, these late Rover-built examples represent the final evolution of a design that remained in production for more than four decades. Today, they are increasingly appreciated as modern classics, particularly when offered with exceptionally low recorded mileage and a high degree of originality.
This 1998 Rover Mini Cooper offers an appealing opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts alike seeking a remarkably low-mileage example of one of Britain's most recognisable and enduring motoring icons.
