Description
That somewhat goes without saying; the Lotus Exige is, in any form, a bit of a mentalist. Throw an “S” for “Sh*t this thing’s quick” on there, and those Brits in the shed have made a car nothing short of a right good time.
Lightweight, supercharged and gloriously direct, the Exige S has never been about pandering to its driver or the conditions around it. Instead, Lotus focused on getting the fundamentals of automotive wizardry right, letting physics and a disregard for creature comforts do the talking. And that’s before anything like the engine, chassis, suspension, gearbox, and soundtrack are considered.
Our Example:
Finished in Pearl White with black wheels, this 2008 supercharged Lotus Exige S is a rare sight on the road. It’s exceptionally clean, coming to the next owner with a substantial amount of specialist attention behind it.
The car has a comprehensive history, noting its import to the UK in March 2023 from Jon Seal Sportscars, as well as two stamped service books, annual servicing and dry storage.
HPE has attended to the suspension bushes and arms, while Lotus Bilstein dampers were fitted in 2023 alongside an AIM digital dash. In 2024, Hangar 111 rebuilt the gearbox, addressing the third-gear synchro, with a Helix clutch and Fidanza flywheel fitted at the same time. The radiator, coolant hoses, air conditioning and suspension geometry also received attention, while an HPE billet shifter and upgraded cables sharpen up the interaction between driver and machine.
Elsewhere, a TRD airbox and 2bular exhaust take care of the breathing and soundtrack, while a carbon front splitter and extended rear diffuser give the exterior a much-welcomed grunt. Inside, Corbeau seats, carbon fibre trim and Alcantara door cards make it clear that this is not a place for discussing your day at the office – you’ve got more important business to attend to in this.Further work in 2025 included EBC and Mintex brake components, Nankang NS-2R tyres and a ceramic coating.
Performance-minded hardware where it counts, protection where it matters, and very little in the way of anything unnecessary. As a result, many of the important things you’d hope have been sorted have been, meaning this 2008 Lotus Exige S is primed for its next custodian, ready to drive away from Duke of London and straight to the Hethel proving grounds.
The (very, very) lowdown:
Any genius can tell you that the Exige S is small, light, supercharged and wonderfully tactile, with the kind of feedback that modern cars have spent years filtering out in the name of wellness and think tanks.
But it takes a true driver to explain why the Lotus Exige S is one of the finest driver’s cars ever made; find a good road, get the tyres up to temperature, and the rest is set to be a hair-raising Sunday afternoon.
Exige S models are difficult to find across the board, particularly examples with this level of documented maintenance and specialist work. For anyone who knows their Lotus cars, that combination deserves a level of appreciation.
We have just one final word of advice: getting in gracefully remains the next owner’s responsibility. Getting back out, of course, is a separate negotiation. If you fancy yourself as the Uri Geller of contortion, enquire with Duke’s Quality Motors to book yourself a visit and see the car for yourself.
