Description
This is the car that started the now legendary MINI GP series, and genuine, original GP1s are becoming increasingly sought after by MINI enthusiasts and collectors. This particular car is GP No. 590 and comes with the exceptionally appropriate private registration S90 GPX. The registration incorporates GP and is remarkably close to the car’s actual build number, making it a particularly fitting registration for this car and us included in the sale.
I have owned the GP for the last four years and am a MINI enthusiast and collector. It has been kept in a heated garage and has been maintained with the intention of preserving it in its original condition. The reason for sale is simply lack of use. It is a car I have thoroughly enjoyed owning, but it now deserves an owner who will use and appreciate it.
At 70,000 miles, this is not being presented as a low-mileage museum piece. It is a genuine enthusiast-owned GP that has been driven, enjoyed and properly maintained. It remains very original, which I believe is increasingly important with these cars. It has not been turned into a heavily modified track car and retains the character and specification of the original GP1. The car has been kept in a heated garage and comes with:
Original GP No. 590 dashboard plaque
Original GP roof number
Original book pack
S90 GPX private registration
Very original specification
70,000 miles
MOT until 08/09/2027
What is a GP1
The 2006 GP1 was the original MINI GP and established the formula that has been followed by every GP since. Based on the supercharged R53 Cooper S, the GP received extensive performance and weight-saving modifications, including the 218 bhp 1.6-litre supercharged engine, six-speed manual gearbox, uprated suspension and brakes, lightweight 18-inch wheels, limited-slip differential, unique aerodynamic package and rear-seat delete.
The GP1 was a genuinely focused performance MINI rather than simply an appearance package. The cars also have an interesting connection with Bertone, with the GP shells being finished by Bertone in Italy before returning to the UK. Each GP was individually numbered, and this example retains its original No. 590 dashboard plaque and original roof number, along with its original book pack.
Recent mechanical work
The car has also benefited from significant recent preventative maintenance. A service was carried out by B14 MINI Specialist in September 2026, including the items identified as advisories on the recent MOT. Within the last 1,000 miles, the following work has also been completed:
Clutch replaced
Clutch slave cylinder replaced
Top mounts replaced
Subframe refresh completed
The car is therefore mechanically excellent and ready to be enjoyed, with significant expenditure already undertaken.
A genuine GP1, retaining its original identity and character, and accompanied by one of the most appropriate private registrations you could put on a GP. A reluctant sale, purely due to lack of use.
