Expert opinion
Ferrari 360
The Ferrari 360 was better built, easier to live with and faster than the 355 that it succeeded. However, it wasn’t without its controversies. Regulation changes for the safety of pedestrians meant Ferrari had to ditch its pretty pop-up headlights, while the central egg-crate grille so characteristic of many Ferraris was dropped in the name of better underbody airflow.
The resultant gawky-eyed thin-lipped face was a bit lizard-like from some angles, but there was no doubt that the 360 was a brilliant car to drive. The aluminium construction meant that it was only 40kg heavier than the 355, despite being much larger – and therefore more generously accommodating.
The 3.6-litre V8 also delivered lightning-fast throttle response, and its 400hp meant it was even faster than the 355. The convertible version was 110kg heavier than the coupe, but lost barely any of its agility, while the stripped-out Challenge Stradale was a pure adrenaline hit – and much sought-after now.
But whether you go for the F1 paddle-shift version, the six-speed manual, the convertible or the hardcore Challenge Stradale, the 360 will prove to be a thrilling companion on road or track.
