Description
Approximately 175,000 944s were built in total making it one of the most successful of all Porsche models. Of these only 25,000 units were manufactured in the Turbo variant. Toward the end of 944 production in 1988 a limited production run of the Turbo S model was released. 3749 units of the 944 Turbo S model were produced worldwide.
Upgrades from the standard Turbo were significant -
Engine - M44/52
New turbocharger. Modified turbine vanes.
Modified DME mapping of fuel and ignition curves and handling of knock sensor and oxygen sensor input.•Cooling system changes to accommodate surrounding body side member reinforcements.
Slightly larger exhaust valves, still sodium (natrium) cooled, permitting better running behaviour at full load.
Clutch -
The clutch was modified with a "wide angle torsion damper". This is a spring-centred design with two stages of springs, providing compliance in the circumferential (torsion) direction. This enables a more smooth application of the additional power produced by the M44/52 engine.
Transmission -
In order to accommodate the additional power of the M44/52 engine, the transmission was modified. This transmission is identified with the additional stamping of "AOR" after the stamped manufacturing date on the case. This "AOR" stamp is the only way to identify the Turbo S transmission externally. Changes include hardening of 1st and 2nd gears, and the transmission oil is externally cooled. Gearing remained the same as the conventional 944 Turbo.
Limited Slip Differential -
Differential strength was improved by thickening the inner plates by 0.5mm at the expense of the thrust ring thickness. Additionally, the shafts are molybdenum coated and ground.
Brakes -
Larger, 12" front disc brakes, similar to the 928 S4, were included. These featured:
Vented rotors, Aluminium callipers, ABS, vibration dampening, 4 piston arrangement
Suspension -
The suspension of the Turbo S was modelled on the Turbo Cup race cars via the M030 option package. It is focused towards a more performance feel than riding comfort. The suspension arrangement includes front McPherson struts, with rear trailing arms.
The significant upgrades over the standard Turbo combined with the 944's fantastic (near 50:50) weight distribution made these cars confirmed 911 beaters.
February 1991, Porsche released the 944 Turbo Cabriolet, which combined the Turbo S's 250 bhp engine with the cabriolet body built by the ASC-American Sunroof Company at Weinsberg in Germany. Porsche initially announced that 600 would be made, but ultimately 625 were built, 100 of which were right-hand drive markets of the UK, Japan, Australia and South Africa.
So The 944 Turbo Convertibles made up only a tiny fraction of the fantastic 944 production line (just 0.025% to be more precise!)
Here we have for sale one of the 100 RHD 944 Turbo Cabs produced world wide.
One of only 32 believed to reside in the UK today and the only one believed to be in this specification..
The Turbo Cabriolet was based upon the 944 Turbo S derivative. Boasting a factory output of 250 BHP with a 0-62 mph time of under 5.5 seconds.
