Looks like an infrared detector to me, same as at pedestrian crossings to check for presence.

So there for crossings then? Not speed cameras?

Help us with some context - why are you asking?

They do not detect cars and are not the same as radar detectors you get at temporary signal sites. They detect pedestrians and assist in the phasing/timing of the signals. Like the detectors under security lights people have in their driveways. Their official name is "Above Ground On-Crossing Pedestrian Detection Systems". They will only be found at pedestrian crossings.

I went through them when they just turned red, literally seconds. So I wanted to know what they were…

Stevestrange, how come they are pointed to the path and road?

That link is not accurate for the vast majority of UK signal-controlled junctions.

I'm concerned about the expansion of state surveillance, especially with the recent almost uncontrolled moves towards facial recognition.

We should question every new camera.

Because they detect peds - they generally won't allow the signals to give a green light to cars while they detect a pedestrian on the crossing. They also aim at the path so that they can (attempt to) reduce the instances of someone pushing the ped demand button, and then walking off, making traffic stop unnecessarily, but that's not as reliable for some reason.

They aren't cameras.

They're connected to Santa's workshop and if you press the crossing button and then cross before the the lights change then you get no presents at Christmas.

Just found that one - that might be a red light camera, because if you go back in time to 2020 on streetview you can see a "traditional" red light camera outside the school that isn't there now. It's a bit strange though, as it's facing the junction and not aimed at the line. You would usually expect the camera to be able to get the car crossing the line, and in most cases be able to see the red light at the same time. It doesn't look like any speed cameras I've ever come across. I think it's more likely to be speed monitoring or parking enforcement for the school.
