Hi All
My stepdad passed away recently and my mum is the executor and sole beneficiary of the estate (therefore no IHT due).

He bought a car just before a terminal diagnosis and now my mum wants it gone asap.

We”re thinking to put my name on the v5 (it’s currently in his name) and I take it home with me. Road tax and insurance are both in place.

End game is for me to sell it and give her the money, and I’m thinking that having the v5 in my name will make this easier.

Does this sound like a good idea? Any other suggestions?

Not disagreeing, but why have you concluded this?
ETA not that it matters anyway if you want it gone pronto. Update the V5 take it to WBAC

It was my reading but I could have misinterpreted. Might just head off to WBAC and take it from there. If I can avoid the v5 interim update then all to the good

I'm sure I've read on other posts that DVLA have a department to assist following bereavement, might be worth a call regarding the V5?

Was it a "New" car purchase from a main dealer: dealership might buy back?

A friend of mine inherited a car in vaguely similar circumstances a while back, the dealer took the car back for significantly more than WBAC were offering.
It's a car they know and have serviced and can sell very easily knowing it won't cause them any grief.

If you are selling to wbac or any other dealer then there is no need to update the v5.

If you search on wbac on their site then they have details on what you need to provide in order to sell a car due to a bereavement. So long as you can satisfy the requirements then it should be fine.

I sold my dads car to a dealer through motorway I think but all the dealers and wbac etc. that I spoke to at the time were all fine so long as I had the relevant docs to support it.

Not sure if it helps but there was a similar recent thread, but also asking about insurance.

The post that will probably be of use in your situation, re the V5, was this one with the .gov link detailing how to update the V5 for sale, etc.

First of all, sorry for your loss.

I sorted this out for my MIL after my FIL passed away.

The insurance was already in her name so didn’t need to do that bit.

You probably already know this but there’s an official process for keeper change…

https://www.gov.uk/tell-dvla-about-bereavement/kee...

it’s important to follow this rather than just do the online change of keeper as they’ll refund unused vehicle tax to the original keeper.
