I regularly use the 50mph average speed camera section of the M4 around Newport, all the cars pretty much are right on the limit all along that section, however the artics seem to come past on their 55mph limiters time and time again.

Has the truck driving community realised these cameras are actually geared not to make the trucks drop down to 50mph and are keeping it quiet from all the tin can drivers?

Most car Speedos over estimate, upto 10%. Mine is 8%.

You're probably not going to get a speeding ticket from the average cameras for doing 55mph (Most police forces applying a 10%+1/2mph limit). So you could be showing as high as 60mph in a car and still avoid a penalty.

The trucks Speedo is generally more accurate, and they probably take the gamble.

I set cruise at an indicated 56 on the grounds that it's below the prosecution threshold even before you allow for the speedo under reading.

I set my speed limiter to 52 when going through the current A3 around the M25 area roadworks, which are a 50 limit, if I have Google maps on, my 52 registers as 50 mph, I'm sure if I set my limiter to 55 it will be a real world 52/53, I go past many when set at 52, others go past me.

Enforcement is 57 in a 50 so some wagons - usually foreign - ride their limiter at 56.

Why isn't this a sticky?

every week another average speed camera post whereby the OP doesn't understand the prosecution limits?

Have you checked what your actual average speed is between the cameras?

If you are keeping up with other cars at around the limit, your average speed might only be 47/48, meaning that there is a lot of headroom before the prosecution threshold is reached.

Trucks keeping on the 55/56 limiter are most likely just under the threshold, hence most/all of them doing it.

So it seems these blanket 50mph limits were actually devised all along around the standard truck limiter of 55mph thus preventing the need to prosecute them, so that they could cruise along the motorways all day long on the limiter without fear of a fine.

Sort of makes sense.

Hope you are all going to chip in when I test the theory and end up with a £100 fine and 3 points! biggrin

Don’t rely on any leeway they are now prosecuting for anything over in some areas, a friend was nicked at 22mph in Lea Bridge Rd London, and on his speed awareness course another guy claimed to have been caught for 21mph in another 20mph limit.

Yep and I'll pay £50 to the charity of your choice if you can produce an actual NIP stating that.

Over the years I've been on here no-one has ever been able to produce anything under the 10% + 2mph leeway.

I've tested it for about the past twenty years on your behalf and can confirm that setting the speed limiter to 56 is fine.

If you want to donate your £100 in my direction, that would would be fine also. smile

So you're saying someone in lane 1 doing a true 50 in a 50 linit with an HGV two inches from their bumper desperate to be doing 56 is a road captain? What do you suggest then? Anyone not doing 56 should be on the hard shoulder or the grass verge? FFS

In this situation, the lorry will overtake when they get the chance.

I see so many instances of road captains "standing their ground" in lanes 2,3,4 that I had just assumed that's what keithons comments referred to.

There's also the pragmatic option of putting a couple of extra mph on of course - we still have never seen evidence of anyone being prosecuted under the thresholds.

But pragmatism is a word road captains are unfamiliar with usually - dogmatic to the point of stupidity is more there thing, though they might prefer "lawful".
