I am hoping someone can help as I've never had a private plate and I just don't understand the process.

So I have bought a 2nd hand car from a dealer with the original plate, I have yet to collect said car.

In the meantime I have purchased a private plate from the DVLA, the V750 has arrived this morning.

The car will be collected next week and will come with a years tax.

I assume I have to wait for the new V5C to arrive with my details before I can transfer the plate? Is this correct? If so I assume when I come to insure the vehicle (next week) I will insure under the existing plate, wait for the V5C do the transfer etc, do I have to wait for the new V5C with the new plate then contact my insurers to update the details (pay another fee no doubt) then I can put the plates on the car?

Or is there a much easier/simpler process?

spot on, wait for v5 to come through in your name.

once you have it can swap the plate onto it, no quicker way than that

Cheers, sorry I forgot to add, I assume the tax will automatically move over to the new plate without intervention also?

Exactly. Also my insurance company does not charge for a plate change, though some do.

Easy isn't it? I did one today as well, my wife wanted her plate put onto her new (to her) car.

Usually if you tell the insurance company you’ll be changing the plate as soon as the V5 arrives then they won’t charge you a second admin fee.
