My wife's engine blew up 10 days ago and the car is likely to be at the garage for a few weeks. Unfortunately, her MOT was due last Friday which she obviously can't do. Just to make matters worse her tax was due today.

I went to SORN the vehicle over the weekend but the DVLA telephone service just says because of high demand they aren't taking any calls and the online system says it cannot be SORN'd with no MOT.

Will I be able to SORN it at the post office or is there another solution?

Thanks

that must be a recent rule change then, because my race car has been sorn'd with no tax or MOT for about 15 years.

In any case, it's only an issue if you plan on driving it without tax/insurance, which clearly won't happen. So just ignore SORN until it is fixed, then get it taxed and MOT'd.

I have never experienced this when SORN'ing vehicles when MOT has expired.
In some cases, it is the very reason for the SORN in the first place.
The MOT is not directly related to SORN, it is indirectly related via the TAX requiring an MOT.

Got a screenshot of the error?

I've just SRN'd a bike that has no MoT as I won't be using it for a few months.

getmecoat user error i'm afraid, I was on the wrong page, I'd gone through to the link on the reminder and not the SORN page.

Agreed. Last time I needed to SORN a car it was because it failed the MOT, then developed an engine fault.

Isn't there an £80 fine if you don't SORN (even if the car is off road) ?

i.e. AIUI the car either needs to be taxed or formally declared SORN, otherwise you get fined.

Not just taxed it needs to be insured as well if it’s not SORN’d, depending on the length of time it is not insured the fine will increase from band A thru C.

And they are pretty quick at issuing the fines for no tax and it may be as soon as a month.
