Spanish cannabis fine
Discussion
Youngest son has just called. Him and his mates on a beach near Barcelona, their last day of a ten day holiday.
He swears they weren't smoking as they'd had a run in with the police earlier in the week and had learned their lesson, sort of.
Police turn up, the boys would stick out as non local, get shouty with them, a bit rough and search them all.
They find a tiny bit of cannabis (personal consumption is legal in Spain just don't smoke in public)
So they are all getting fined. Passport details and addresses taken.
One of the boys speaks Spanish and was told the fine would be €300 to €600 EACH!
Now at this point I'd expect them to be marched to a cash point or ordered to call parents so money can be paid.
But apparently they'll send the fines to home addresses.
Is this how it is really done?
Seems a bit of a flight risk, if one decides never to return to Spain....ever.

Are you getting the full story?.......
Or concerned dad trusting one side?
Two run ins in one week suggests they are acting like f
king idiots.
Croyde as above. I might be wrong but haven’t you had issues with him smoking pot and generally being a lazy so and so before?Or concerned dad trusting one side?
Two run ins in one week suggests they are acting like f
king idiots. I just want to know about the fine and the validity of it being sent to England.
He may well be lying, I'm really effed off with him and it's his alcoholic mum that let him go and no doubt paid for everything.
If they were living under my Junta, there'd be no drugs, and no money unless they worked for it.
They'd hate me but maybe would thank me for it in the future
So come on lads, don't shoot the messenger, I don't really have to hear it all again.

Went Costa Del Sol with some friends, one was a stoner who managed to score it on the first day there.
Word is, that as a tourist, if not taking the piss normally a friendly warning from the police.
It is decriminalised there and there are now places you can buy it legally. Apparently growing it is legal too.
As above, I think there might be more to this story.

Seems they bought in a café.
I'm absolutely sure I am not getting the whole story by a long chalk.
Police told them, via his mate the Spanish speaker, that they'd each be getting a fine of at least £300 and that it would take a few months to arrive at their addresses.
Like I said before, passport and address details written down but no paperwork handed out.
Just seems odd to me that the cops didn't try getting money off them there and then. They took all the weed though.
Cops were on bikes.

The law on cannabis is a bit odd here in Spain… you can grow 3 plants on your own property for personal consumption, and you can buy it legally in a private club (you need to pay a nominal membership fee)…. But possession on the street remains technically illegal… though it’s very rarely prosecuted.

Just wait and see if anything ever comes through. Seems unlikely. Maybe the lads were being idiots and police just felt like trying to s
t them up a bit.
Years ago my mates were arrested by the Spanish Police in Benidorm for being loud in their hotel room. They were carted off to Benidorm Police Station and “interrogated “ by the cops trying to get some free tourist cash out of them. Apparently they held those fake cigarettes to their faces that had a plastic red glowing ember on the end. After a few hours they were kicked out into the street. I think they were at the station from 05:30hrs till about 09:00hrs.
t them up a bit.It’s likely a teach the unruly little s
ts a lesson thing. This postal fine part sounds like BS to me, more like they were being too loud, so the cops thought they would 'tax' them of all their gear to end the party?
The police 'friendly warning' bit was also caveated with a 'don't mess them around as they are proper hard nuts'.
Bad recipe for beer-ed up young tourists to get too wasted with super strong puff. Ironically, regular smokers would have more tolerance, know the effects and normally know how to behave and generally not attract unwanted attention.
May have taught OP young son a good lesson on moderation : have a party if you wish, but behave or bad things happen.
I was on a stag do in Spain many years ago.
Post dinner I went to bed. Half went clubbing.
One guy who was a nice bloke not a t
t etc came out of a club. There was a push bike. He got on it an got a few feet before being arrested. Night on the cells.
Court appearance a few weeks later. Return to Spain, lawyer. Cost including the fine was some £600.

I think you can just buy it in shops. I saw quite a few of thesehttps://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/jul/12/barc...

Weed or resin can only be sold in approved private members clubs… though the membership fee is nominal… I paid €20 for lifetime membership some years back (don’t smoke anymore).
