The Local Drink Driver – What Would You Do?
Discussion
I have a neighbour who is very obviously a habitual drink driver. My suspicions were aroused a year or so ago when I motioned to him to slow down driving through the village, which he took enormous offence to. His response was to stop, erratically reverse, wind his window down and give me some meaningless rant about how he'd lived in the village all his life. He was clearly inebriated.
Now this guy lives less than half a mile from our local, yet his car is always outside it, with him sat at the bar. On Sunday I saw him sat outside just before 2pm waiting for the pub to open, and his car was still outside at 9pm when I passed by walking the dog.
Before anyone asks, he's not drinking 0% because the pub doesn't do it.
So what to do? I hadn't really considered that it might not be just between his home and the local pub, that he could be doing it everywhere, so I feel compelled to nail the f
ker.

Report him to the police and give the reg. no, pub location, times etc.
Drink-driving is something I can't abide and anyone who does it deserves whatever f
king comes to them.
This- It's the only sensible option, I would be tempted to report it regularly too o push Police to take action, Roads Traffic Officers are often thin on the ground these days but I know a couple and they do love to get drink drivers- Which I fully support. Drink-driving is something I can't abide and anyone who does it deserves whatever f
king comes to them.Sounds like the guy may have a alcohol problem.

Report him to police.
When in our ops room I took calls and details passed to local stations.
Give his name, car reg, address, times he drink/drives, where he drinks. We would use that to target the drivers and catch them in the act.
Do reg numbers get logged on your anpr system so it pings up when you are out on patrol? When in our ops room I took calls and details passed to local stations.

missus works in village pub. EVERYDAY (except sundays) 3 locals come in from "work" about 1400 and drink 4-6 pints then go home about 17-1800. I've reported their work vans, reg, names, times of leaving to police about 12 times. Never once have a seen or heard of a patrol car coming to our village so i gave up.
most evenings we get the same regulars driving in, then driving home. I've given police their names and reg, pub and rough time they leave. never have i seen any police come to our village.
Why bother when our police can't be bothered to attend?
Landlord (who is a habitual drinker, pool team away game driver and drinks Carling on away games as it is the "driving lager" but won't drive on away games when they are in town due to abundance of police) tried to stop some locals from driving home but they ignore his please and two have recently (since june) crashed their cars but thankfully not injured anyone else.
i get sick of the flagrant idiots who deserve no sympathy but i have no way of stopping their behaviour as the police are not interested!
Sorry rant over - OP report them

If he's spending Sunday afternoon and evening in the pub, he might not be fit to drive on Monday morning. As others have already said, reporting him is right thing to do.
ker. Also, presumably he's well-known in the pub, so I wonder what the landlord or bar staff are saying to him each time he leaves to get in his car? If they're turning a blind eye, then it doesn't reflect well on them.

You're not facing a difficult decision really, are you?
Not at all, I guess my question was more along the lines of whether I should have a word myself before the Police. I've spoken to him in the pub recently, he obviously has no recollection of our first encounter, but I guess that set the tone for what he's like when he's had a few.One further complication is that the local bobbies wife occasionally works behind the bar, and has done for some time. I'd be amazed if she hasn't seen clocked what this guy is doing. The landlord is a next to useless pisshead, so there's no point mentioning it to him.
I'd give him one last warning by blatantly telling him that you have seen him drink driving, and that if you ever see him do it again, you will report him to the police. He may not even realise what he is doing, as some people with an alcohol problem are totally oblivious. I doubt he'll stop, but then when he is caught and his life is messed up, he'll only have himself to blame.

Personally I wouldn't bother having a word for two reasons. Firstly, he's unlikely to pay any attention to your warning.
Secondly, he'll just blame you when he's caught, which could lead to animosity.

Don’t do this - because when he is stopped and caught he will blame you and mark your card.Just report and move on.
