I got brake checked today by an absolute degenerate moron. We were going into a lane closure and I understand it's merge in turn.

I was already in the open lane, let a car from the left lane in front and all of a sudden a moron comes barrelling down and tries to also get in front of me as the lane narrows down to one. There wasn't enough space so they had to slow down and tuck in behind.

He then pulls in front of me and brake checks me to a complete stand still, does it a couple more times switching from lane to lane multiple times continually brake checking me as I'm trying to get away from him.

I don't have a dashcam sadly but is there anything I can do? I'm absolutely fuming and it's one of those cases that I'm just replaying in my head trying to understand what causes someone to behave like this.

This. If you don’t have any evidence to get the idiot followed up, just move on, and don’t let it affect a minute more of your life. We’re not all driving gods, but increased observation’may’ have let you see the throbber coming, and just left a bigger gap for him to move into. He’ll be thinking he’s won the day, but what’s really happened, if you’ve controlled the situation and him, without him even realising what’s happened.

The usual way that goes is moron tries to get in but car already in the queue (in this case you) decides they are not having it and does everything to stop the moron getting in. Moron, who has low self esteem, an immensely fragile ego, anger management issues, and often a huge problem dealing with the fact that he can't afford a car as good as yours, then has to demonstrate what a big man he is by tail gating you through the lane closure and then brake testing you afterwards often accompanied by much yelling and gesticulating.

What you learn after a while is that these "driving gods" aka morons are totally infallible in their own minds. It's never them, it's always the other guy thus anything at all the other guy does is an insult no matter how egregious the thing the moron did to initiate it. Ergo there is no point in engaging with them at any level, even blowing your horn or flashing your lights will upset their arrogant sense of ultimate superiority.

The best advice is just to let them go, not to react (because there is no point), not even to look at them and let them tail gate the one in front instead of you. You don't then have to bother about them and you can content yourself with the thought that the proliferation of dash cams means they'll meet their Waterloo eventually, or they'll do it to someone much bigger than them with an even shorter temper.

If he was in front why were you trying to get away from him? The best place is for them to be in front and not chasing you, you just slow down stop or turn away, obviously if they're following you or doing dangerous things call the police. Usually it takes two to tango, don't bite or react, get them in front and pause until they've gone.

You won't shut the door on someone trying to filter in front of you next time then I guess?

Isn't that 'merge in turn'?

Why wasn't there enough space?

A dashcam wouldn’t make difference.
It will annoy you for a while. Next time just tell them a big fk you to let it out your system and get off at the next exit.

Move on.

I do find it kind of ironic, these type of drivers always seem to in such a rush, in trying to barge ahead or cut in and then when they don't get their own way, all of a sudden they aren't in such a rush and tend to like to hold up the driver who didn't give in to their bully boy tactics by slowing and brake checking said driver!

Or, you could say, the driver who didn't let in the chap was being a bully boy. Cuts both ways.

I always use the filter lanes and go right to the end. I'm rarely "in a rush" or "self entitled" (or "barging in"), I just use filters as they are supposed to be - and very, very frequently the cars on the left all purposefully bunch up to try and stop you merging in turn. It's no wonder people get arsey.

This is absolutely the case and the only good way to deal with such situations.

But in most cases, waiting until pretty much the last moment is what you’re supposed to do, with some caveats.

There is a balance to be struck between the letter of the rules and basic courtesy and consideration for others.

I would add that I generally allow anyone to merge if they want to. If they are in that much of a rush it’s better that they’re allowed to go.
