M40 Junction 4 - Mobile Speed Camera Midnight?
Discussion
Hello,
Probably being paranoid in this case.
This morning I was driving from outer London to Birmingham.
At around 0:15 AM just after I filled up with fuel in High Wycombe as I pulled on to junction 4 heading northbound - I gave it some beans (dry, clear, empty) and chased the red line. I think I reached an indicated 108 maybe (I wish now it was not this much!).
After backing off and settling down to 68 mph (which remained the case for the rest of my journey for MPG anyway) I looked into my rear view mirror and on the Cressex Road overpass (I now know from Google Maps) noticed a van/caravan/small truck but I was pretty far down the road at this point so I couldn't really tell what it was.
A handful of Wazers were on the map and there were not any reports.
Does anyone have experience of seeing camera vans on the M40 at this time of day?
Many thanks!

No direct experience, but the London side of that interchange is marked as an active Mobile site on PocketGPSWorld, but a van/police car on that side wouldn't be able to see you heading towards Birmingham.Probably being paranoid in this case.

Personally I very much doubt that a camera van would be out at that time of night anyway so I'd not worry about it.

I'd concur with this. Unless the BiB chase you down or you go through fixed/temporary cameras, you're pretty much off the hook. I wouldn't worry too much.On the M40 hard shoulder or the bridge over the M40?
Often a camera van on the bridge around there. Catches a lot, especially from HW towards Beaconsfield. A long downhill stretch going that way, easy pickings!
I can’t see a camera being on the M40 hard shoulder.

If you do, unless he is broken down he is breaking the law anyway, report the bugger if you see one, rules are rules. But I doubt they would do this.Often a camera van on the bridge around there. Just had a look on their app and I see what you mean so certainly can’t be that site.
Defo was the bridge for Cressex Road near HYC airport where I saw something.
And yes I also in the moment thought surely not at this time just played on my mind today.

Here (51.6121871, -0.7963574) it certainly is a bridge but not the bridge / roundabout that serves A404 aka Handy Cross Roundabout. Often a camera van on the bridge around there. Catches a lot, especially from HW towards Beaconsfield. A long downhill stretch going that way, easy pickings!

Not sure about West of Handy Cross
Good luck !
I travel on the M40 a lot and whilst I’ve seen daytime camera vans and stationary marked cars/moving unmarked cars I’ve never seen a camera van at that time of night.
That said there are a lot of “innit, bruv” types from HW who use it as a nighttime racetrack, so they might have been on the hunt for them.
If you get a brown envelope within the next few weeks you’ll know for sure but hopefully you’ll be OK.

Thank you for your insights. A friend has told me not to worry/stress about it until that point. It is already something I won’t be doing again in the future: envelope or not. I have seen a camera van on the hard shoulder just before where the M40 reaches the M25 first junction....impossible to miss but its right in the hard shoulder lane a few times now! Not sure that's a great place to plonk it either...I guess PCN revenue is down...!Edited by James6112 on Monday 2nd October 16:23
West of Handy Cross and you should be fine. Its a long old stretch to J5 so the init bruvs go the other way to J2 and back.
Going east just after J3 the road climbs and there is a bridge . That is where the scamera van is usually sitting pointing east into London. Always during the day.
