I got a withdrawal this morning for 20 quid on my current account which is linked to my PayPal account.

I couldn’t think what it was for, the reference number meant nothing so my thoughts went to fraud.

Long story short I reported the transaction and changed the password. After I’d done that in amongst the emails I got from PayPay was a notice about subscription that I’d had for years to an online forum. Ooops.

However this forum went down nearly a year ago which was one of the reasons I’d forgotten.

Do you think PayPal will refund me or will it be up to the honesty of the webmaster? Should I contact him directly? Only 20 quid so no big deal but better off in my pocket.

I don't have any advice to offer but I sacked PP off after I spotted two unauthorised transactions on separate occasions. One was for 70-odd quid at a games store and the other was at a book shop.

PayPal offered no explanation, no apology before swiftly refunding me the money taken.

Immediately after I’d opened the case they sent an email saying they had suspended all transactions including subscriptions. It was only then I realised that it was actually on there.

But you'd also known about it when it was set up, albeit a number of years ago - its not like its a fraud or someone set up a subscription using your details, unknowing to you. Its just that with the passage of time, you'd forgotten about it?

Isn't the issue that the payment is still being taken after the forum has been closed down for nearly a year?

Yes, the issue is with the service provider and the OP in that case. Paypal is just the payment method. Whether there is a complaint route, for the lack of the service/subscription, whatever it is, is the issue here. Paypal aren't going to automatically refund or disallow payment to be collected.

Yeah, I just got another email from PayPal saying no fraudulent activity. Which I expected as it was my own fault for not realising the subscription was still in force.

I suppose I can write to the webmaster and ask him to refund me. Seems a bit tight for the amount it is but they really should have stopped subscriptions when it was obvious the site was never going to restart.

A bit of both our faults.

Also AFAIK, PP won't accept subscription cancellation notices - they will refer you to origin of the subs and its up to them to cancel it.

Not sure if this helps, but I have noticed on many occasions when you buy something with PayPal, that it doesn't always actually hit your bank until days later.

Many times I've bought a digital game code and paid with PP and then I'll see a random amount hit my bank days later when I've forgotten what it was for!

Also PayPal allows for DDs to stay in your account (even if its not an actual DD it can show as one) so I always make sure to clear these after any purchases.

Unexpectedly I got another email from PayPal saying they had reviewed the case and decided in my favour. That’s after the email saying it wasn’t a fraudulent transaction.

So I’m getting the 20 quid back. I just hope it hasn’t affected the other guys account.

Good result, thank you for updating the thread.
