Looking at classic cars on Ebay is now a waste of time. Pages full of cars for sale that are so obviously fraudulent it's not possible that Ebay are not aware of them. They are getting their fees so are clearly not bothered. My point is that, not only must they be aware of these attempted frauds, they are profiting from them. Criminal conspiracy case? Report to police?

Facebook Market Place is pretty much the same. So many fake adverts for certain items it's unreal

It's also full of fake, dangerous chargers, batteries etc. I had a charger go on fire (fake macbook charger) ebay were not interested, same seller still selling them.

I could not even get my money back.

How this is legal I do not understand.

Was going to say the same, because it's free it's become virtually unusable.

I find the scams on ebay are even more obvious if anything which means you can still use it.

No point reporting the ads, it's an exercise in futility and a quick way to pulling all your hair out.

I bet if ebay were fined for every fraudulent ad they'd be eliminated overnight.

I've been reporting obvious fake watches for years. Sellers still up. The law only applies to the plebs.

I find the same on Amazon these days with 'market place'.

All is does is drive me back into brick and mortar stores, happy to pay a premium for proper products & aftersales support if required.

Did eBay tell you why they are happy to allow the sale of counterfeit/dangerous goods?

Gave up buying anything much on ebay years ago. So much absolute garbage product, inflated and downright lying product claims, it must be virtually impossible for genuine sellers of genuine products to compete.

We only have ourselves to blame. We want something shiny and new and only want to pay a few pounds for it, whatever it is. The Chinese are happy to produce the appropriate quality.

On the fake ebay ads, you’re wasting your time. It’s been the same for years. Ebay get paid, there’s no legal risks so they don’t give a stuff. It’s not just classic cars, it’s everything, particularly higher value stuff. People only notice the stuff they are into and might be actually looking for. At one point I reckoned fully 10-20% of ebay adverts for camper vans/motor homes were fake.

The good news is that a simple phone call is all it takes to discover a fake, if it’s not obvious from the advert.

The government are working on the product safety element. Who knows how long it'll take to amount to anything.

I've not touched ebay for a very very long time nor will to buy anything.

I stopped selling on there when they wanted a linked bank account. Not a chance.

So the scammers are now using ebay to sell fake listing on motors? This will kill ebay. Its credibility/brand is trust.

I managed to get through on the phone to them after waiting hours, they refused to engage in conversation about it. Like literally the person would not reply to me when I asked about it. Madness. I should have recorded the call and put it on youtube.

In early 2000s a friend was selling custom built computers on ebay, they banned his account until a list of parts suppliers was sent through and they even rang suppliers as they sent a letter asking if they should disclose his personal information to ebay,

Another couldn't sell some cheap electronics and never got account reactivated again.

Perhaps something has changed?

You seem to have a friend/know someone for pretty much every thread on Pistonheads...

One thing I would like to hear on pistonhead, is like as a friend did years ago, he nominated his brother, who nominated his friend, who nominated him, who nominated no one again as he never got another, and they never heard anything about it again.

Would be nice to have recorded account on when they give up.

Wouldn't matter, friend had a very secure drive and garage, submerged barrier, dogs and nighttime gate control security in a booth looking at it just 2 meters away whilst sat behind gates with it. Ins Co wouldn't budge an inch.

know someone that reserves his parking space with one, was at the end of a dead end and they all parked on an angle, one day his trailer turned up, and hasn't moved since, he drives on and off it and no one had dared to park on it yet.

I once had a friend that replied like that online forums too, it was because whilst most of it was a friend, some of it was his own and family life experience, but just because liked to be fairly anonymous on line.

P.s I now have a friend that feels a little stalked, but likes that I exist to them. hehe

Relax, no one's stalking you. It just struck me as odd/funny how so many of your posts mention a friend/you being involved in similar situation as those being discussed.

I've bought and sold at least 30 cars and motorbikes on eBay for the last 20 years, never had a problem. The fake ads are because somebody has had their account compromised, given away their password etc. You can't just stick up a fake ad for free like FB without an account. Not revealing bank details? Get real. It's not a problem, you get paid quicker.

As said above, fake ads easy to spot, way under price, or clicking on 'see other items' reveals a huge list of vehicles. rolleyes It doesn't seem worth it, just clogs up the pages but they must get victims or why bother? When I report them, they get taken off. If an account is legitimately accessed and an item put up there, how would they know? The legitimate account gets billed but they don't seem to care, I've even sent email to tell somebody their account has been hijacked, they seem blissfully unaware.
