Threats to kill
Discussion
A friend of mine was threatened to be kneecapped, killed for £250 and sworn at by a third party I know to be a disgusting narcissist
This all happened during a phone conversation which I don't think was recorded. I do believe it was all said as described. My friend is a very honest guy
Friend has reported this to the police, has a crime reference number and will be speaking to police in person soon.
Is this likely to cause the third party to get in trouble?

It depends on what the 3rd party says to the PoliceIs this likely to cause the third party to get in trouble?
E.g.1 "Yes I just need to get the £250 together and speak to my mate "Kneecaps O'Reilly" and then he gonna do him proppa" = likely to get into trouble
E.g.2 "No, never heard of this bloke in my life. By the way you couldn't lend me £250 could you?" = probably be fine

Out of interest was the kneecapping free? Or was it some kind of BOGOF "pay for the murder and we'll throw in a free kneecapping"?This all happened during a phone conversation which I don't think was recorded. I do believe it was all said as described. My friend is a very honest guy

I would be a bit hacked off if some low life decided I was only worth a £250 price on my head. This all happened during a phone conversation which I don't think was recorded. I do believe it was all said as described. My friend is a very honest guy

Rule number 1 - DON'T TALK TO THE POLICE This all happened during a phone conversation which I don't think was recorded. I do believe it was all said as described. My friend is a very honest guy

I have worked in factories all my life. I've kind of concluded there is a bloke usually called Danny in every factory who knows a bloke who knows another bloke who will kneecap, or murder any stranger for money.
Depending on how much he likes violence and how much Danny likes you, and is prepared to vouch for you, he might do it as a cash in hand job for minimum wage. Or he might set up an escrow account and give you a quote for tree surgery and the price will include sorting out the dodgy looking trees at the end of your garden. That way he can legitimately put the money in his account, and pay the correct Tax on it.

This guy has made threats a way of life. He usually makes them to people who listen to him so he's used to making threats cos they're usually lapped up
Now he's made a threat to someone who's not a hard man but is intelligent and is doing the sensible thing by reporting it to plod. My friend has no intention of ever speaking to the third party again but feels this stuff needs to be on file. Let's see if it goes anywhere

You'd think this, but in reality the value some people put on a life is depressingly low.I've been to what ended up as murders over as little as a £20 drugs debt.
OP if you're friend genuinely believes these threats to be genuine, then it's likely the person making the threats will be contacted by the Police as a result. Certainly from what you've said anyway.
I had someone threaten to kill me over writing them an honest but negative review
He was a recovery driver and had been to my house
He wasn't the brightest as he used his own phone and sent them in multiple texts
I had his name, phone number and business address - the police were absolutely useless and wasted hours of my time and ultimately did bugger all
One of the conversations went along the lines of they didn't have enough information to locate him - unless I could supply his date of birth
FFS !
They then said that as I had called the local police and he lived in Yorkshire, that it was too far for them to travel.
I suggested they called him and arranged for him to recover a car from an address near the Police station - They said they couldn't do that as it was entrapment
There's a reason people break and ignore laws because the police are absolutely useless - unless you're speeding IME

Write any changes to mental health/impact etc down, if you witnessed call and he became upset/anxious etc.. write it down, and your concerns for your friend on being told, recording the richness of any underlying anxiety/upset/fear in description and proof its date, posting copy to yourself, photographs emailed to yourself etc.. friend do the same in case any later case is needed, once on file he should have a reference number, may come away with idea/be told he's being kept eye on already, could be asked questions to try get any facts that could aid other offenses. And likely be told if he bothers you again, even intimidating in street to give them a shout. Now he's made a threat to someone who's not a hard man but is intelligent and is doing the sensible thing by reporting it to plod. Edit: as you asked if would cause offending party grief, if you ask not to take action, its generally respected, but its on file just in case.
