Speeding on the M23
Discussion
Mrs M has just picked up a NIP (or rather, I have as RK) on the M23. 'Speed 80mph in a 70mph'.
I presume this is the wording they use where the camera was on a gantry where there wasn't a variable limit? I guess the smart motorway cameras will all be active at some point.
Does she qualify for a speed/motorway awareness course at that speed? She doesn't have any points and has never done any course.

Was this between the M25 and Gatwick?
I sometimes see the cameras flash, but the cars going through don't appear to actually be speeding (or hardly if so.)
80 is only 1mph above the 10% + 2mph free allowance so a bit mean, I'd always thought they were generally set to 90+mph when the variable speed limits weren't in operation.

I think you're optimistic - 80 mph is 10 mph over the limit. To achieve a "real" speed of 80 the speedometer would almost certainly be showing significantly more than 80. At that speed on the the M23 you'd usually be travelling significantly quicker than all the other traffic.I know some people on PH say they're still able to drive around at 90 mph without any problem but my experience these days is that if you set the cruise to 79 mph you won't find many people passing you.

Starts at 79.I sometimes see the cameras flash, but the cars going through don't appear to actually be speeding (or hardly if so.)

TX.
Thanks all, the NIP states M23(N) Junction 9 to 8, Nutfield.
I was in the passenger seat but didn't notice any flashes (not sure if the yellow cameras on smart motorways flash?), just surprised that the camera was active when the speed limit wasn't variable. NIP received 13 days after the offence, so maybe they have a lot to send out?!

West Sussex Police hold them in the hotel at Hickstead. It was 'incredibly useful'... my favourite bit of advice from the day was that you should use a much lower gear so that your car is loud and you therefore realise how fast you're going. They recommended never using a higher gear than 2nd in a 30mph zone. Really good use of time.

Really, at an age with the net zero goals and emissions concerns they are telling people to bring the revs up using lower gears...

It may have been the scamera van then, they sit on the raised police access section there with it at times.
Cheers again, just logged on to name Mrs M and can see photos, does this look like where you mean?TX.

I got caught out by this in the Bristol area several years ago (doing quite a bit more than 80
) and now assume that wherever there is a camera it's enforcing the limit, variable or not.Chris
I have never trusted those cameras to be off when there's no speed shown on the gantry. I always go under then under 75, closer to 70. However I do always see people just flying through them and I wondered if they got tickets or not.
To be clocked at 80, I'd have assumed you need to be doing 84+ or thereabouts on your actual speedo which is faster than I would be travelling normally anyway?
I wonder what EVENT NUMBER: 20 is in relation to. Is that the fine issued in that period of time? What's the period of time? Per day, per hour, every 12 hours. Or do you get 20 chances and then they fine you! Wouldn't that be nice!

They are always active. I see a lot of flashes on the M4 when commuting.Uncle Meat said:

Just a single flash for these cameras.Whataguy said:

1) The ‘free-allowance’ is +10%+1mph. So 78 mph is your ‘free limit’. I sometimes see the cameras flash, but the cars going through don't appear to actually be speeding (or hardly if so.)

2) I know someone who was SAC’d for 81mph
