Small car park bump - advice please
Discussion
Morning all
My Mrs was in a retail park the other day and was just reversing out of a space at the same time as someone else was reversing out. My Mrs stopped just before they touched but touch they did. It was the lightest of touches and left absolutely no marks or damage on our car what so ever.
In light of the pouring rain, all my Mrs did was exchange numbers and no pictures.
Woman has now messaged sending us a picture of her damage and said a mobile dent man is coming to quote on Wednesday next week for this repair.
My Mrs is convinced she didn't cause this damage and the woman remarked that she had just had this done only a few weeks ago so clearly has history. My Mrs is a little passed off as it was the lightest of touches.
Obviously insurance would go 50/50 and excess would be more than the cost of repair so I think pay the woman and move on, but thought I'd ask the wise world of PH

Damage to her car
Thanks
Jim

Your pic makes it appear that the edge of the bumper is no longer in line with the panel.
This might just push back in, but you won't know that until the 'chap who does chips' has had a look at it & you might find it escalates to a bodyshop if there are any alignment issues that he can't deal with.

Yes this is what she has said. Bumper now isn't aligned. Hopefully it just clips back in. Personally I'd give the bumper a push and touch up the chip but I run sheds
I'm expecting the woman to say someone else is paying so I'm sure the dent man will add some on top. Just have to wait and see!

Hang on a sec, shouldn't this be a 50/50 arrangement? Both equally to blame. I'd offer half after seeing the proper bill.
I thought the same so have offered her half. She said she doesn't think it will warrant insurance but I think half is fair.Have to see what the quote is now. I would assume insurance would want the bumper off, repainted etc so could add up to ridiculous amounts!

So your Mrs was stationary when the other woman reversed into her (albeit only just)? Not sure why the other woman feels she’s entitled to anything at all. I’d be telling her I’m getting my own “dent man” in and sending her the bill.
She says she is "fairly sure" she was. I think we'll just pay 50% and get on with life!miniman said:

Because that’s how insurance works.Without any supplementary evidence it will go 50/50 if an insurance claim is submitted, and they 3rd party has every right to do so.
Both parties are likely to blame the other, claiming they stopped first.
The right (& sensible) thing to do, if it’s a small simple dent pull / chip repair is to settle 50/50. If any shenanigans start appearing just threaten and if necessary go through your insurance.

That's exactly what I said to my Mrs and exactly what we are going to do. Thank you everyone. I'll update with the quote price when we get it!Without any supplementary evidence it will go 50/50 if an insurance claim is submitted, and they 3rd party has every right to do so.

Surely, outside of it being handled as an insurance claim, if they're both equally to blame it's fair to each pay for their own repairs?
The fact your wife's car isn't damaged is moot.
Insurance doesn't do "knock for knock" but in this particular case I'd have thought it's a fair way to proceed.

What do you pay insurance for?
Just pass it on the them.
Just tell them you stopped before impact. Worst you'll get is 50/50 and if you're not claiming for any damage then it won't cost you a penny.
If you say that you stopped before impact but she admits she was still in motion then theres a higher chance of her being found completely at fault.
Or just tell her that you've found damage that miraculously costs the same amount to fix as hers and go 50/50 on the overall cost. I don't really get why you're stumping up cash unless you feel like you were completely at fault.

Either both parties are at fault or neither are in this situation, not sure why you are offering to pay 50% of their repair.
I would just tell them you were stationary and they hit you, if they want to make something out of then that is what you pay insurance for.
Going through insurance for what might be a small chip on the paintwork would be a ridiculous outcome. But that is for them to decide. All options are available.I would just tell them you were stationary and they hit you, if they want to make something out of then that is what you pay insurance for.

I wouldn't offer even 50%, what is to stop them then putting in an insurance claim and stating you have admitted liability by paying 50% of their repairs? The fact your wife's car isn't damaged is moot.

The OP has said their car is undamaged but they should a good look underneath to make sure as plastic bumpers pop back leaving the structure behind crushed. Had this one a previous car, rear impact bumper had no marks, impact absorbers had absorbed the impact and needed replacing.
The OP has shown their cards too early and is now in a weak position.

The OP looks to have just rolled over for 50% of the repair cost on the assumption they are half to blame without knowing what they have agreed to. If the bumper popping out is a broken clip the bill is not going to be 50% of £200 plus any hidden damage.

He hasn’t rolled over, he’s awaiting a estimate of damage. My Mrs has informed the insurance already and logged it as an incident so in the event that the quote from the other party is too much, it can go via insurance.
There is nothing to say my Mrs has damaged her car but without witnesses or cctv, it's her word against ours so would go 50/50 anyway
I'm just going to let the Mrs deal it as she says I'm overthinking it and she will deal with it so no need for me to get involved now
