Evening everyone, sorry is this is abit short I'm absolutely fuming!

Having left the Dyno today with a very healthy happy finished car. Coming up the hill on the A417 towards the old airballoon pub. On of the big works tippers coming the other way dropped a massive rock. With a car on my inside I had nowhere to go.

Long and short is the sump is stove in (custom big wing) I managed to limp the car home as it still had oil pressure. And no obvious leaks I thought I was lucky. However getting close to home it's loosing oil pressure at idle. If I'm lucky it's just tweaked the pickup but could be all sorts of damage.

Do I have any chance of getting anything from the contractors ? Don't have any evidence, or even a reg as the truck was going the opposite way.

Wouldn't even know where to start with going about this if it even possible

Or is this just something I have to suck up? Fingers crossed I can fix it before her first track day on the 5th.

I can't help but think they'll just reply 'prove it' sadly.

This unfortunately. Unless you have clear dash cam footage you have no chance. I would forget. Sort it, and move on. Proper stty bit of luck. Hopefully there is no internal damage.

As above, prove it.

I don’t think you’ll be able to prove it either.

I’d probably take as a lesson to protect the sump with it hanging so low out of the car. Looks like a harsh speed bump would take that out.

You could have given yourself space to brake.
It was your decision to drive home with a damaged sump.
I hope you haven't killed any bikers or cyclists with your oil.

It's really not that low, about 150mm just behind the front axle. It's never hit anything before.

Wheres the oil leak in the photo ? I pulled over to make sure it wasn't leaking. So I didn't kill it, or anyone else.

I would wish that a rock flying towards you rips your sump off and kills your engine. With absolutely no where to go.

But I'm better than that . So I hope you have a good evening and can crack another beer so your less grumpy.

Thanks national highways. Not a chance that's beating out without effecting the mating face.

Thanks for the advice. I shall quietly suck it up and try and sort another sump before the 5th. I think she ok

Sadly it's just really bad luck in your case as proving culpability would be nigh on impossible as other have said.

Although not a great experience; I guess it could have been a heck of a lot worse.

Hope you get it sorted anyway smile

Not arguing but the pictures suggest otherwise!

I’d be gutted just as you are.

From a rock that fell from a lorry going in the opposite direction? Please explain.

He said 'with no obvious leaks'. So how were the bikers and cyclists all going to die?

Do you have a car?

Amazing.

If the OP had got struck by a meteorite I swear someone would find a way to put the blame on him.

Space to brake? What for a vehicle dropping something going the other direction?
Bellend!

Bringing this back to a practical level;

Identify the road works (or whatever works you are dealing with) and the principle contractor involved.

Find the route to a complaints procedure and follow it through with the facts as you have stated.

You don't state if the rock came from off the vehicle load, or from between the vehicle wheels. If the former, it's an unsecured load, if the latter, then it is the drivers and/or banksman's responsibility to ensure there are no trapped debris.

You've nothing to lose by making a legitimate claim for this, so why not?

You may be successful, you may not.

What I will add, is that having been on the opposite side of such a claim, where it was absolutely 100% not our cause or liability, a very swift decision was made to pay out as it was both cheaper than the insurance excess and saved potential negative press.....

Given you appear to have had normal oil pressure while driving the only damage you've suffered is a dented sump and the loss of a sump gasket, a lucky escape and probably not much point in pursuing the wagon company without dashcam footage. Is the oil pick-up pipe bent? A decent sheet metal worker could cut the dent out of the sump and weld in new steel pretty quick, no need for a new one.

Unfortunately all we do when we reply to these idiotic posts is feed the troll and that is what they get their perverse kicks out of.
The best thing to do is just totally ignore. They then fade away.
These people usually have some deep psychological issue and an overwhelming negative depressive life. They get relief by posting in this manner so in their warped minds the receiver of the post by responding is also then afflicted with some angst which makes them feel better as they are then not the only one with a personality disorder.
This is all very well researched.
Again best advice from many experts is just ignore.
Even me posting this will have have given them a bit of a high but I thought it was worth doing once just for info.

It will be off to the fab shop Monday to see what they can do. But yes it's probably not worth the hassle of chasing. Cost me about £100 so far with oil and new gaskets.

I have a lead on another rwd sump too. It's not a modified big wing. But might be able to make it work.
