Adding a non UK resident to a UK insurance policy

A bit of a random question to be asking but here goes, my brother will be over from the states later on in the year and rather than hirer a car for the two weeks while he is here I want to add him to my cars insurance policy (whether for the full year, a temporary add on or get separate temporary policy else where). Because he is not a UK resident any more my current company won’t allow him to be added, anyone else had to do similar before and if so how did you resolve it?

I have already before posting and they had said no, hence why asking

All depends on the insurer. I have found that some are totally relaxed about it, some are absolute "computer says no" sticklers for not budging.

Try one of the temporary cover insurers

Temp cover / Cuvva etc

They will do non-UK nationals but I'm not entirely sure about US residents.

I had this. Assumed easy. Flat no. I don't recall finding anyone who would do it and they hired a car.

I really don't follow why.

Yes. LV and the premium came down. I got a small refund.

No experiance myself but i know my mum/dad used to do this regulary with my uncle from canada. not sure if he kept a uk licence in all honesty.

I tried AXA over the phone and they would not consider it at all. I tried getting a quote on one of the temporary cover sites and it would not even quote. I have just got off the phone with LV and they said they would cover for a temporary policy when needed up to 4 times a year for 6 weeks at a time. Will try them for renewal date, will see who else comes and add to the thread.

I did this for my sister in law (South African) when she came to stay for a month. My insurer (Admiral) did it no problem, but I did have to do it over the phone and not through the online account.

This is precisely the point. Broadly speaking you need a UK licence just to get to the starting line.

Years ago we add Australian Relatives no problem (much of ours are any licensed driver any way).

We’d also one relative who bought & insured his own car for a bit.

Added my pal from Canada to my policy on the Aston a few years ago to share the drive down to Le Mans with no issue. That was with Admiral.
