watching Traffic Interceptors And a chap got done for going into a vehicle at 70mph
at Court he got iirc 3yrs 2months for the carnage and disqualified for 2yrs 8months.. It could be v v.

Q and it may be dumb.... are these consecutive or concurrent?

The prison sentence and driving ban run concurrently.

This is to prevent him from driving home when he is released after serving 1/3 of the sentence.

Maybe expected to serve 20 months inside with 12 months of ban left beyond that?

AIUI, the ban commences from when the prisoner is released from jail.

Correct. Also note that we have open prisons.

Wrong.
To be banned from driving whilst in jail makes that part of the ban completely pointless, if it's supposed to be a penalty. It's like banning a non-swimmer from going swimming.

Which is why there's an extension period. Discussed in various threads.

Why go to the bother of an extension period, just start the ban the minute he is released, with an automatic ban whilst in prison (should it be an open prison)

But then somebody has to keep checking when that is.

They may be released early.

They may be released for fixed periods prior to actual release.

They may be transferred to an open prison.

Who tells DVLA the specifics?

Much easier to just do consecutive & extend.
