Looking for suggestions for insuring a second car please

My young lad has got himself a new 2nd hand car, but still has his previous car (a Fiesta). His existing Fiesta policy has allowed him to add his newer car for 7 days. Hopefully we’ll sell the Fiesta this week, but if we don’t, what’s his best option going forward?

Switch his policy to his new car and take out a short term policy for the Fiesta until it sells? Or an annual policy but pay it monthly?

Just phone the insurance company and get it sorted. They're 100% familiar with short "two cars" overlaps when you buy a new car and then need to sell the old one.

I had this with Direct Line. Outgoing leased Q5 with 6 yr old Golf that I bought to replace it. New old Golf onto the permanent policy and Q5 on to the temp one for 6 weeks ish. I called DL spoke to someone and to be fair to them they made it easy and cheap too.

I was quite surprised.

This was Jan 23 things may have changed.

My advice, speak to a person.

Easiest and cheapest solution is usually to ask existing Insurer to give temporary cover on the new car until the old is sold -not every Insurer will agree obviously. When they do its usually for up to 30 days.
If current agreement cannot be extended then I think I would be taking out the 12 months on the new car and asking the same Insurer to then issue a new 12 months policy on the old car,When its sold cancel and yes I realise there will no doubt be an admin charge but if you were paying monthly they would also be charging you a credit fee on top anyway so the latter may come down to understanding the cheapest end result.
You could of course also insure the old car with a temporary policy with someone else as you say.

Bit of an update - the insurance company for my sons Fiesta won't cover his new Audi S1, but he had already obtained some quotes before buying it and it's looking like he'll have to take out a new policy for it, to run alongside his Fiesta policy. Then, when his Fiesta gets sold he can cancel that policy.

Not sure of any alternative/better options.

maybe as a bit of an "aside".

Audi S1: look at an agreed valuation policy or a "classic" policy if it qualifies as such.

In the circumstances that's probably the best option.

When I took delivery of a car and was getting rid of the other one I used Zixty for 30 days cover. Wasnt the cheapest but needed a policy that covered business miles and not many do. Few companies out there to look at. From memory they are on comparison sites.

Unsurprisingly his current insurer of his Fiesta won’t cover him for his S1, but he’d already got a quote from Admiral that it looks like he’s going with.

Beware of NCD. He may need to prove the existing NCD for the S1 insurance, this may be problematic if he still has the Fiesta policy.

Good point. He’s in his 2nd year of insurance so he only has one year NCB

Yes had similar a few years back, new insurer got arsey and gave me a few weeks deadline to cancel old policy so NCD could be transferred or they'd cancel

Thanks for the link djohnson

We eventually sorted this...

My son bought his Audi S1 whilst still owning his Fiesta, which we are selling. His Fiesta insurance company wouldn't add the Audi S1 temporarily so he took out a new insurance policy for it, with Admiral. However, Admiral wouldn't provide temp cover for his Fiesta so he cancelled his Fiesta policy that same day and I took out a 30 day temp cover in my name with dayinsure for £143

So at least the Fiesta remains insured and we hope to sell it over the next month.

Blimey!

It would surely have been cheaper to insure for a year with no NCB & cancel when sold.
