Hi folks,

I was stuck on the congested M62 the other day, and it got me on to thinking: I know that for the most part, policing by camera is less desired (I certainly don't think there are many here who are delighted to see a speed camera).

But if a middle-lane hogger camera could be developed, and more policing of drivers just sitting in L2/L3 could start, how would you all feel?
To me, it'd seem a good way to start to make an inroad into some of the abysmal lane discipline I've seen lately on the motorways.

I also suspect that if such a thing could be developed and approved, we could definitely tackle a fair amount of the national debt by deploying it on the elevated sections of the M6 near Birmingham, and on the M25..

What do you reckon?

All you would need is a week of getting Traffic Police to target MLM drivers with £500 fines. Once a couple of people in your office get stung by these fines, then people will talk and take notice.

A prerequisite for that would be to first have some traffic police..

It would help if they fixed the lane 1 bumps, tramlines and damaged tarmac with the money.

There are tons of traffic police. I'm sick of this ignorant attitude. Just because *you* dont see them, they're there.

They have many responsibilities:

They're lead investigators in road side fatalities
They support victims and witnesses where someone has been killed
They do public order events such as football, planned protests, arrest warrants, etc

They use plain vehicles sometimes
They work with DVLA and other authorities on proactive investigations

They do road blocks where they're trying to identify witnesses who may have been there a week before

They have to do training routinely and attend court which takes them out of their shift schedule

They do general patrols 24/7 from motorways to residential areas

They support local officers in pursuits or just for attending incidents

..

The police do target middle lane drivers and often tweet results or put them on YouTube. They work with the road authorities to constantly tell people to move left.

I don’t think blueacid meant that to be as derogatory as you interpreted it, he is suggesting that cameras could do a more efficient job, plus with all their other responsibilities they don’t have time to cruise around looking for MLMs.

You'll definitely find me in the middle lane if lane 1 is like driving offroad.

I don't want to live in a world where you get fined for everything. London is about there already.

I lost the will to live, when overhearing a driving instructor telling his pupil to stay out of lane one, just in case there was a breakdown or stranded vehicle..

Force of habit and an obsession with following rules means I don't MLM but does it matter which lane you are in if there is nothing wanting to overtake you?

I've found on many occasions a car overtakes me and carries on in the middle/outer lane into the distance or until a faster vehicle is approaching and the car in front goes into the lane the highway code prescribes.

I prefer the idea of a short term campaign to fine perpetrators a high fine but we'd need to give Police vehicles to drive in for that wouldn't we? Actually, we'd probably need to employ some Police. I suspect cameras would be the lower cost.

Perhaps "A prerequisite for that would be to first have some traffic police who aren't busy doing other stuff"?

I'm sorry but that is just absolute rubbish, as confirmed by most of the serving police that post on this forum. They continually tell us the numbers have been cut so much they are now unable to do the job properly at all.

All I would add is that if they are there, then they are doing a pretty crap job of sorting out the increasing downward spiral of illegal and dangerous driving.
I can't remember when I last went out and didn't see some yob charging around on electric bike or scooter, someone hogging the middle lane, someone driving dangerously, someone ignoring red traffic light, etc, the list goes on.

I also cant remember the last time I did see a police car (although I accept they may have been in an unmarked car.)

There is a perception that there is an almost 0% chance of getting caught by the police for all sorts of low level crime, which is why it is so prevalent. MLM is one such example. If you can't get caught then why bother to change your ways?

See also shoplifting, theft and general antisocial behaviour alongside motoring offences.

On your first point I think it does matter. It’s sloppy driving, and people who do it (in my experience) are unlikely to change their lane if a faster driver is approaching in the correct lane for their circumstances.

You should be made to wear some sort of warning sticker on your rear window to humiliate you. "MIDDLE LANE MORON" in luminous lettering for a month.

I run a graphics company so I'd be happy to put myself forward to tender for the government contract.

Say your driving in lane 2/3 or 4 and your vehicle cuts out, its a lot harder to get to the hard shoulder than if your driving CORRECTLY in L1

So driving in the middle lane if the nearside lane is clear is now a *crime*? No wonder the prisons are full.

Just watching a news item about increasing the fine for littering (which I consider worse than driving in the middle lane) from £80 to £500. Interviews with people complaining about litter. But if there's no-one to fine them £80, who's going to fine them £500?

PS How are we getting from 'middle lane hogger' to 'MLM'? Google doesn't know what an 'MLM driver' is.

Most people not happy about middle lane hoggers are happy to be speeding. So it’s just the choice of law they want enforced - the one that benefits themselves.

If I’m ‘hogging’ the middle lane at 70, what’s the problem?
