I have just got back from holiday to this on the doormat.

The letter states I drove off without paying for 70 quids worth of fuel at a Sainsbury's on the 13th of October.

I use this petrol station but cannot for the life of me remember going in on this particular date/time. I was in the area on the particular date/time as it's between my golf course and home.

I've checked bank statements and no transactions on there. Drove down to the Sainsbury's and asked for the CCTV, I'll need to get this off of BOSS/QBR through a SAR.

Manager in the store said the woman who deals with this isn't in until Wednesday, that means I go into higher "admin' charges with QBR as I've only just opened it up.

Oh I've just tried registering on QBR/BOSS and can't with the reference number as it isn't sending an email to confirm account creation.

What's winding me up is the petrol station dosn't have pay at pump contactless, I never use my card now.

Has anyone had this mess happen? If it is a genuine issue with me not paying or payment not going through then fine but how do I prove any of this.

I've contacted BOSS to query if this was a payment issue and will be phoning QDR in the morning.

The petrol station is usually an absolute mess for organisation with dippy teenagers in there behind the till.

Bit im not liking here is I have no appeal option with QDR clearly explained or any proof I was there in person.

So I've rung QDR this morning who are the solicitor acting on behalf of BOSS.

Can I have evidence "We don't have evidence"....Can you tell me where I can get this, "No".

I ring BOSS, they tell me they will request it (Client for Solicitor)....surely that happens the other way round legally. Interestingly they ask me if the Sainsbury's in the town where the address is is the closest Sainsbury's. I'm also reading a lot of accounts on Reddit about similar cases at Sainsbury's.

BOSS were more reasonable, they said I should tell QDR to request I hold the case until evidence is found so I have done so.

BOSS guy also asked if he thought I'd put in the relevant amount of fuel sounded right, and tbh it does as 70 quid is about half a tank which Is all im doing now at the price per litre lol.

QDR respond emails may take unto 10 days lol.

I'm starting a FOS Case today on QDR as it's rather borderline practice going on for the debt recovery, I can see why they might be like this for crooks but 95% of the crooks are probably on a stolen plate or car in the first place.

I think something has gone wrong on the pumps/system/payment and I'm obvious to the payment not going through. It must be, the pumps at the station don't take contactless.

How can they do anything to recover the alleged debt without evidence?

I haven't got any evidence that you owe me £100, so send it over now or else! nuts

This is what I said, it's ridiculous.

Biggest issue I have to sort this out is time.

I asked for the case file to note I'd asked for a hold/extension verbally and to then send me an email...the guy says, this may take unto 30 days LOL.

It's a debt collection bully service, I've been in Lanzarote last week and all I did was open the cap cover, a guy fueled up for me and took payment, big corps just seem to think these things save money and are a good idea but reality is in the long term it's not, it's hiking up the cost of everything from tech that don't work to the actual cost of the item in question. In the US you pay up front...

At the bottom of this will be a genuine mistake, I am not a thief and someone has not failed to take payment on purpose...either of the two, I'll get to the bottom of it.

Not sure how you think they would do it without "debt recovery" would you rather they just take you to court/instruct a bailiff/get the BiB round?

Surely (I stress I am obviously assuming the evidence is genuine/correct) there is an unpaid debt and they want it paid, simple/straight forward enough.

There are few I had seen on Reddit where the "evidence" was someone behind the till wrote down the reg number on a bit of paper, really dont see how that can be an acceptable form of evidence either, CCTV should be the absolute bear minimum

Debt recovery is just trying to bully you into making payment. No debt recovery firm sends anyone around to doorstep anymore. It's too expensive and gets little results. So they pretend by sending threatening hurty letters which some people get spooked about. Until it's a County Court Summons it's nothing.

And the proof without CCTV. Can you imagine them bothering to get the cashier that day to write a statement? Cashiers can make mistakes such as charging you the wrong pump etc.

I've had a couple of those. The people who send those letters out have the intellect of a leaf, so I always reply. My best win, after replying to two letters from the same outfit, was that if they contacted me again I'd charge them £25 admin fee to reply. They sent me another letter. I replied, invoiced them for £25 - and they paid it.

So, Fourstardan, see if you can get £50 smile

They certainly try it on. One favourite tactic seems to be sending out letters demanding payment of a debt where recovery is time barred. My wife received such a letter demanding payment of an alleged debt from 15 years ago...they rolled over very quickly when she e-mailed pointing out that the alleged debt had been time barred since about 10 years ago. How many people would just have paid?

I expect this means I wont be able to fill up at a BOSS monitored PS though until resolved?

Also does anyone know how the system works? Does a dipsht till attendant press a button? Is it automated?

£70 of petrol is quite a few miles.
What other petrol have you bought in the last month?
Personally, my car use is quite random these days, I can go a week without moving my car, then do 500 miles the next week. Most people are not like that, can you not reconcile where you've been last month to the petrol you've bought accurately enough to know whether there's a tank unaccounted for?
A lot of people would buy roughly the same amount of fuel each week, so the pattern would be obvious.
Other people would have bought fuel elsewhere a day or two either side of the disputed purchase, so unless they'd done a big single journey, it's unlikely they'd taken the disputed fuel.

Is it exactly £70? I think round number purchases are most vulnerable to staff fraud/theft, that's why things are priced 4.99 etc.
I would only pay cash for fuel as a last resort anyway, and I'd want a receipt.

I think people have got used to pay at the pump, making it easy to forget to pay after filling up. I've come close to that myself. My car takes ages to fill up, long enough for the mind to wander!

They should have CCTV, and possibly ANPR.

I hope a "dipst till attendant" gets a warning that lets him or her know that there's an arrogant arse outside, and presses the appropriate button and you have to walk.

BOSS dont monitor fuel payments.
Garages in their scheme refer non payment incidents to them and they chase the payments up, taking a cut of monies recovered by way of admin fees
