No insurance, tax or mot. What order to do things.
Discussion
Just asking on someones behalf. They are looking at a bike later this week which if its in good condition they will buy, but it has no tax or mot and he will obviously need to get insurance for it. What order do you need to do things, ie can you not get insurance until you have tax and mot or can you not get tax until you have an mot etc.
Thanks

Can insure without tax or MOT(might not be valid if you crash though). Book MOT,take to MOT without tax. Pass MOT. Use MOT cert and insurance Cert to tax.
It will be valid, as long as it's only being used to drive to the MOT station (and back if it's failed. Most policies are totally valid and have no exclusions anyway, those that do will only exclude any damage to your own vehicle.

True, but it is surprising that people don't acquire the relevant knowledge when first buying a car or bike.
PMSL, I invite you to chat to my wife or daughters, or, if you want to laugh at me, trawl this :http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
It is like anything else, once you know, you know, until then ?
Just look at the different tread depth regs on tyres for different vehicles.
If it wasn't for the internet, I wouldn't know half of the sod all I know now.

Well, most people will probably be buying a vehicle that already has an MOT and usually it'll have some tax left on it also. If not, the garage will normally sort tax on their trade policy, leaving the punter to just organise their own insurance policy to drive it away.voyds9 said:

Why. Every car I've bought has been taxed (and MOT if required) by the garage, the only thing I sort out is the insurance.Insurer
MOT
Tax.
IANARS (I am not a rocket scientist).
Sorry to bump an old thread but didn't want to start a new one. So my insurance and MOT run out on the same day. I've already taken out a new policy which starts as soon as the old one runs out.
Is there any chance the new insurer would find out that my MOT expires and reject my policy? Current plan is to not drive my car all week until Saturday when I will have an MOT booked nearby. Getting one in the week isn't possible because of work.
I've looked around a bit an as far as I can tell it should be fine unless I have an accident on the way to my MOT.

Even if they don't fail it on some spurious pretext, be prepared for a list of advisories along with dire warnings of imminent doom if you don't have them fixed forthwith. One way to pre-empt some of the dodgy tactics is to always watch the tester from the viewing window/gallery during the entire process. I passed on this tip to a mate a while back and he noticed the guy craftily spraying fluid onto a shock absorber to make it look as though it was leaking.
YMMV.

Failing an MOT does not itself invalidate your insurance - and you need insurance to drive to a repair place and back to the re-test.
I've used Kwik Fit for MOTs regularly and they're fine, didn't even try to sell me a tyre when they found a bulge in the inner wall of one of my fronts. Beware if you want to use them on a Sunday though; I booked a Sunday MOT through their website once and got a call saying the tester doesn't work on Sundays so the option to book for Sundays was erroneous.

I know I deserve facepalms for being an idiot. Are Kwik-fit any good for an MOT? as they're the only place near that's open Sunday. Always heard nothing but bad things about them though.
At least you're self aware.......Didn't you read the original thread? You don't need tax or mot to get insurance. You need insurance to get to an mot. You need insurance and MOT to get tax.
It's really very simple.
And by the way, KF aren't any good at anything IMO. Last resort only.
