MLM fines come into place today

Just seen this on BBC news. MLM to get on the spot fine up to 100 quid and 3 points.

It isn't a new offence but will give police new powers to punish those who do this.

Bit surprised there's no thread on this already especially as it's such a bugbear of most PHers!

Keep an eye out on this thread for "friends" getting caught tailgating when they clearly were not....

Blimey. Changing lanes at a roundabout? With the silly road markings being used today, if you don't know the area you're now stuffed if they're watching.

The big issue with this is it will need a Copper to see the offence so unless you are massively unlucky or tailgate through/past a police station you should be fine.

Agree 100%.
I spend every week day evening/night trunking from Manchester to Glasgow. From Manchester to Preston you see a few traffic cars both marked and unmarked but from Preston to Gretna I will not see one.
I do however regularly get stuck with a 50 mph MLM, speeding car/van drivers with a variety of trailers and more commonly I see trailers with speedboats or jet skis flying in lane 3, not through ignorance but regular users know they will not get caught.
Expect a barrage of tickets in urban areas for the roundabout lane discipline and giveway junctions, ironically probably by traffic officers taken away from the motorways to cover the shortfall of officers!

They should have just made 'undertaking' or passing on the left acceptable.

In my experience its much more than 1/3 of drivers it's more like 3/4 who simply don't adhere to lane discipline.

They're not new offences. It's the ability to deal with minor s3 offences via FPN instead of the only recourse being to court.

In theory, if people aren't lane hogging and are using the correct lane, that should more or less eliminate the majority of tailgating too

If you go to an empty motorway - of which there aren't that many unless you drive around at 4am or maybe the M6 toll - then MLMs are relatively rare. The problem is that many drivers have no concept about how little time it takes to move from the middle lane, to the left lane while someone overtakes and back again to continue their progress past whatever obstacle a mile up ahead is causing them to be a MLM.

My guess is that the police will use this as a way of warning motorists.
Pulling over an mlm, threatening them with the fine, then letting them off if they promise to stop doing it.

DIzeee, Just to cover all of your posts regarding no changes and how long it will take and your general comments..........

Google the new driver fines and go to the Hampshire and Isle of Wight police force comments today (can't get link to work)

This was about 30 mins ago but I guess it's just more Internet rubbish eh?

If we are all sat I a traffic jam together and start moving we should all be done for tail gaiting. We could pay off the deficit in one day on the M25.

I don't think you have a great undrstanding of s3, particularly 'inconsiderate driving'. Perhaps it's this poor awareness that's as much a historical problem in ability to deal as anything else?
