Honest to goodness this isn't me - its a chap I met at our local car club who drives a similar car. Honest.

He told me he just had 2 weeks 'off' as he was caught doing 49 in a 30. I tutted as only a total knob does 49 through a village, but he explained where this was and that he got caught a few hundred meters before the NSL started and as he was exiting a village. Many of us have probably increased speed a little earlier than the NSL sign, especially given the time of day/location and knowing all the hazards/schoolkids/shops/zebra crossings are totally behind us...

However I just though the scamera vans didn't operate that late and in the dark and in the rain though, and in the b middle of zero nightlife no-one about nowhere? Or is this another nail in the coffin of common sense/discretion and another tick box for the invoicing machine?

Puzzled.

Increased speed a little maybe, but still he had to have been accelerating some to get to 49 several hundred yards before the sign (or not slowed down at all through the whole village) Sorry, but for me this was fully deserved.

I couldn't possibly agree with you less. Shows no pragmatic thinking. Especially as he did not exceed limit in village centre.

Just evaluate the couple of hundred metres often between end of an inhabited village and the technical end of a restriction. Or just go by the book...(easier).

Don't condone what he did (and I genuinely wouldn't have) but this non event did not warrant any ban. ( he normally repairs people not b damages them !)

Anyway...thoughts on the van thing?

ACPO guidelines suggest 50mph or upwards is the threshold for summons in a 30mph zone. I also struggle to believe that 49mph attracted a ban by the beak.

The vans do work at night and in the rain, I see one on a regular ish basis hiding in the dark back off the road.

Can't address the specifics, but some of the cameras in Liverpool seem only to be switched on and armed during poor weather.

Easy enough to do: in the MR2 Tub or the T5 I can easily pull out of a junction and be doing 40 in second gear before I even realise I'm about to pass a speed camera.

[2 weeks ban is what I was told - harsh? Dont know if he had previous - but a totting up would have been min 6 months wouldn't it?]

Looks like its true then - the laser dodges raindrops and they are happy to miss their dinner and Eastenders?! Be good to hear from anyone done at night in the rain.

Im not sure about dark + rain, I've seen them in the dust/evening but not pitch black.

As someone said on here ages ago.... treat the NSL sign like the pit lane limiter, once you hit the sign bury the throttle lol

I too used to subscribe to the view that the vans only operated when it was nice and easy for them and wouldn't put the operator out too much - but have seen a local one operating in a 40 limit on an A road nearby, 9pm in the evening, at a time of year when it was dark by then.

Isn't there a minimum distance from a speed change sign they have to be or is that only in NL where I know for sure that it is the case?

I've been caught just of the M5 in a 30mph limit in the middle of bloody nowhere at circa 9:30pm. If I lived anywhere nearby, I'd be out one night and let all his bloody tyres down. Or set fire to it. Depends on my mood.

Vans can and do work in the dark. I suspect there is an argument about using in the rain i.e. the beam is electromagnetic radiation so as I recall from schoolboy physics would refract through a lens, or raindrop, so could affect its reliability. Never yet had it argued before me yet though.

We may not like it, but limits change level with the signs, not as soon as we see them. So, don't accelerate till we are level with them, or risk being caught.

Finally if dark and wet, I'd guess visibility is reduced, stopping distance increased. Both factors which merit a higher than usual penalty. So in the dry and daylight, probably 4 points. In the dark and wet, then a short ban not unreasonable.

Interesting Bob - I've never personally seen one in the more challenging dark/wet/main beam environment, but as you say even more reason to keep a cool head!

one of the pleasures of driving is hoofing it in 2nd at the 30mph/nsl sign, why do it before?
