Was my first thought too. Now people don't need to pay tax or insurance, they can just steal or clone a numberplate of the same colour/spec car as they have.... plus any speeding etc and the real owner of the plate gets done not them.

Great thinking there DVLA.

Well, they've been able to do that for a long time now, as ANPR has been operating for years and it's the main way cars are checked. When did you last see a copper checking tax discs in the street?

So, the only difference now is that the car cloners no longer have to fake a tax disc. But let's face it, that wouldn't have been very hard to do anyway with Photoshop and a colour printer.

I was under the impression that almost all enforcement had been ANPR based for years now, so can't see it's going to make much difference.

It's astonishing the faith some people put in a colourful piece of paper, isn't it?

Good reason to not post up pics of your car with the plate displayed, cloned red Golf anyone:

TX.

Edit - don't you just love ANPR though:

"Each read plate is stored in the national ANPR data centre, in Hendon, north London. Police can obtain permission to access the database for a specific investigation and then track vehicles’ movements over the previous two years."

Because, of course, nobody could find a plate from a red Golf any other way, could they?

My stolen car was recovered when an eagle eyed traffic wardon noticed that the reg on the tax disc didn't match the reg on the car. That won't be possible any more frown

Hmmmm, every day's a school day. I certainly don't remember THAT being publicised when ANPR was introduced. I would also imagine it would be news to most people too.

Used to spend time on nights in the wee small hours years ago wandering the streets finding untaxed cars. We'd submit a ticket into the DVLA informing them the untaxed car was on the road. Then the following week on lates - pay the owner a visit to check the rest of their docs (all on line now of course). Cant happen any more now unless the cars hit a camera. We'd find stolen and altered discs whilst carrying these checks out as well

Of course without a tax disc on display the thieves wont know which car was taxed and therefore legal so would be taking a risk to clone

“Without tax discs I think that there will be an increase in cloned cars and an increase in innocent purchasers who buy these cars without realising that they are cloned.”

Never in my life did I actually check the tax disk which came with a car had the correct number plate, i think anyone who is careful enough to do that, is not likely to somehow miss all the other signs that it is cloned, and someone who is good enough at cloning cars to fake all the paperwork or alter the vin or what ever needs doing, could simply remove the tax disc and sell it as untaxed if it showed the wrong reg on it

I'd love to know the stats for percentage of vehicles used in crime that are cloned, I bet its pretty high.

Its the simplest system to fool ever
