Seem to be getting mixed messages about when those of us who still hold a paper licence need to get a photo one. DVLA don't mention a date but have heard several people say it is next year. Anybody got a definitive answer, with links?

Still got mine - nothing on the net about compulsory replacement. Only have to get a photocard licence if any of your details change or amendments are needed

Paper licences become "illegal" in 2033.

Paper counterpart licences will no longer be issued from 1.1.2015 - which is when you may destroy your counterpart if you so wish.

A friend shared this on FB earlier...

So there is misinformation out there, but - yeh - my understanding was that it's the counterparts going, and paper licences will just continue to be gently phased out as people move house etc. By 2033, the number of people in their fifties or sixties who haven't moved house for at least 35 years is going to be minimal anyway.

There isn't a definitive answer as the date hasn't been set yet (or at least, not released to the public).

The authority to recall all paper licences was granted a few years ago.

Wrong. 19.1.2033 for paper licences and 1.1.2015 for counterpart licences. These dates are in the public domain.

Mine is looking very tatty!

Yep, but it's a credit-card sized piece of plastic.

I'll stick to my tatty one then! I'm not giving the DVLA a photo of me to sell on to anyone they wish to for now!

Do you walk around with a bag on your head in case anyone sees your face?

It's been widely reported that paper licences will be recalled in the not too distant future.

However it could be that whoever is in Government when it becomes timely may not bother.

My lads licence (pink paper one) expires on 13.11.2048

Now whether it will still be legal then is another matter, however it is valid until then

It's been misreported, yes.

I've said before that the paper licence withdrawal is likely to be completed by January 2023 - which would obviate the need for an expensive exercise later. As mentioned above, assuming we are still in the EU, then deadline is 19.1.2033 - photocard licences are valid for 10 years - which is why the exercise should be completed by 2023 if the government is to minimise expenditure.

If you own a passport, the picture is the same one the DVLA use, so it's possible your picture has already been sold. biggrinbiggrinhehe

So what about the ADR certificate? Is that still going to be on paper, even the CPC is a plastic card now.

(Mine runs out next year, so this may already have changed)

Just got my first 'plastic' licence due to an imminent 70th. Did it on line but not an experience I would care to repeat, though I suppose I'll have to. frown

How is this going to work then? The plastic ID card isn't a legal document, only the paper counterpart is.
