Hi guys, just a quick one, picking up my new car tomorrow and I'm just about to tax it now, however when I try to set up the new direct debit option it states it wont take the money from my account until the 17th of Nov, so will I be taxed between then and the 17th? Or should I just use the one off payment option to guarantee immediate payment?
Thanks!

I did mine a few weeks ago and it said that I'm taxed from the 1st but the first payment comes out on the 4th. No idea why, thought maybe that the 4th was a Monday but it's not.

Set up my direct debit on Sat 1st. Got the confirmation email but its still showing as untaxed?? 1st payment due on 17th as others have posted . Could it be the amount of people setting up DDs for the delay ?

Dunno, just checked mine and it shows that it's been taxed since the 1st (their new beta page is pretty good, first time I've looked at it). If you've got the confirmation email and haven't bounced a payment then would have thought you're sorted anyway. Got internet banking? Mine shows a DD set up for Driver & Vehicle Licensing GBS.

Also not sure why monthly direct debit is approx £15.75 when times that by twelve equals £189!!

Yeah.... I think its the 'approx' he's commenting on, not the arithmetic!

Just noticed that, surely that's a mistake?

No it isn't. It's a quite deliberate anomaly which has been there from the start.

At present, paying VED bi-annually attracts a surcharge of 10 per cent. Biannual and monthly payments made by direct debit will attract a lower 5 per cent surcharge. - https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploa...

Paying 6 months up front costs you more than by DD, so my view is that was designed as a sweetener to persuade people to set one up. Do you really trust the government's most arrogant and incompetent Agency to have access to your bank account?

Even with all that the cheapest way is 12 monthly. I've never bought less than 12 months as I'm too tight :/

12 monthly DD works out at 75p/month extra than paying off in one hit. No brainer, pay-as-you-go motoring. They're getting set up for road pricing...!!

I know, I work in the industry. I just thought I'd be all tabloid and kneejerk.
