Hmm, I don't think an insurer is going to let that slip through the "not for hire or reward" clause.

Is it similar to lift sharing?

http://www.theguardian.com/money/2011/mar/12/lift-...

The Association of British Insurers has told Liftshare that car sharing won't affect the insurance of their members, so long as a profit isn't made: "All ABI motor insurers have agreed that if your passengers contribute towards your running costs, your insurance cover will not be affected as long as lifts are given in a vehicle seating eight passengers or less," says the ABI.

Interesting.

Souldn't like it could help with my high commuting costs but I imagine in reality will be a total PITA waiting for unreliable smelly people who can't afford their own car and are surprised that you're annoyed when their cat pukes all over your seats.

Blabla car is lift sharing. It works out the price so that a profit is not made. Insurance companies have no issue.
I've been signed up over 2 years and have found it most useful. I've never had a problem with 'smelly people who can't afford a car'; but then I remember the time when I couldn't afford a car either. When I have to occasionally make jouneys from below the the M4 to well above the M62, it comes in handy as it means I'm happy to use the M6 toll and go a bit quicker because I'm less worried about the increase in fuel consumption.

Win win IMHO.
