Short term Insurance & road tax
Discussion
Hello.
So situation I have is, one of my track day cars is currently sorned as I have been using my new one recently. I'm looking at booking a day and using my Fez which is sorned.
Now I can get a short term insurance policy to cover it as I don't currently have access to a trailer to get it there but am struggling to work out how I can tax it, I cant even work out from Google if its possible to tax with a short term policy with the new rules.
Any ideas?

The problem is that if it's taxed it must be insured, so if you're looking at short-term insurance, you need to figure out a way of doing short-term tax as well.
You'll be in a position where you have to SORN every time the insurance expires, then re-tax & re-insure every time you want to use it on the road.
However, apparently you can tax it without insurance being in place (and, no doubt, a countdown to a fine being issued starts).

Insurance isn't checked when taxing a vehicle (as above), as of 16 December last year - but (as also posted above) a vehicle must be insured if it is taxed...
You'd be looking at taxing the vehicle for 12 months from the start of the month the vehicle will be driven (and insured) in, then SORNing it again and losing a month's 'tax' of the 12 - not very economical financially
. 'Taxing' for 6 months only will result in a reduced refund (pro-rata as per the 12 month rate) so that's even less good value for money. Or you could pay by direct debit as opposed to buying 12 months', at a 5% surcharge.
I also believe that once SORN has been declared the vehicle cannot be re-taxed in the next 4 week/1 month period - in general terms - but am happy to be shown to be mistaken on this
. This may not be a problem (if it's true
), but it's something to consider "just in case"

It's true you can only tax/SORN once a month online. However you can do it every day at the Post Office if you so desire.
