So, those police vans with the black windows on the side and back. How far away can they register your speed? There was one up on a flyover near Beaconsfield on the M40 with a nice clear view down a stretch of motorway. :-(

I had an interesting chat with one of these scamera operators many years ago and was astonished to learn that the operational range of this particular camera was one mile. Having taken a look at the LCD display of approaching cars it occurred to me that if you're speeding you stand little chance of evading a fine because they can see you well before you can see them. How does that justify the safety camera partnership stance when they nick you even before you can see them?

If I was to say that from approx 100 yards I could read on the LCD display the postcode printed on the bottom of a numberplate of an approaching car you might appreciate how good the optics are on these speed cameras, and let's just clarify this term, they are not safety cameras, they are speed cameras designed primarily to generate the maximum amount of revenue possible, from as many peasants as possible.

As for the speed camera awareness courses, just learned of a guy that was having none of the brain-washing session, and told them, in no uncertain terms, what a bunch of c**ts they were, well they were utterly speechless. So let's hope this is the start of a rebellion against this stupidly slow Orwellian speed limit cr*p smile

What a strange reply from someone owning a 911?

bitter much? Not bitter at all, I learned my lesson years ago on a dual carriageway near Leeds with a 50mph limit.

does your masterly car control not extend to your right foot? Of course it does, but minor adjustments are required constantly to remain within the stated limits that tend to vary so much nowadays for no good reason apart from tax revenue.

You owning a 911 should know all about right foot control, shame if they drop the limit mid corner wink

I'm actually more hacked off by the continued wasteful level of taxpayers money used to pay for these safety camera operators, vans and speed cameras and all the other related self-serving jobsworths, when we as a country have an unsustainable level of debt around our neck and are being told that we need to reduce wasteful spending - well sack the lot of them and install average speed cameras across the country. Or is the mountainous national debt just an illusion.

In one sentence it's about revenue, then the next it's a financial burden that deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as the national debt.

Out of interest, what is the level/amount of taxpayers money used to pay for all that you have listed, and how much would it cost/save to sack people, then install all the average speed cameras you mention?
The government stopped any taxpayer burden in 2010

Taxpayers £0.00
Drivers caught speeding £all of the costs

Yawn. Look up the figures. Tiny in national terms. As for comparing speed limits with Orwellian tyranny, get a grip.

Percentage comparisons with a convenient but irrelevant larger total (whether it's the Met's total budget or Polfed's expenses or the police's pension liabilities) is a known statistical device for spinning the numbers to make them look small. Taking money and giving it to people involved in the money extraction process creates its own problems that cannot be dismissed so easily.

As to the view that mentioning Orwell is somehow unsupportable while acting as a diagnosis of somebody lacking a grip, each is entitlted to their opinion. When that well-known intellectual lightweight and Oxford Exhibitioner Auberon Waugh stated that speed cameras are fatuous instruments of oppression designed to exercise power and impose subservience purely for its own sake, he was echoing the thoughts of many. You need more than a one line put down to make a contrary case. Go for it.

Nor others to yours smile so here's some data for anyone other than your good self to review regardless of your chosen and pointed absence from the debate.

Two suspiciously linear trends, one for the pre-cam era and a slower decline post-cam. Now some might wave a hand in the air and mention the law of diminishing returns while whistling innocently, but last year's data makes that tricky to sustain and the discontinuity is still there.

There's an update due out soon which I'll do my best to remember to share with SP&L when it's on general release.

As to the 'lightweight' with an Exhibition, tut indeed he didn't even graduate either. Which in terms of those who either didn't attend university or didn't graduate, puts Waugh on the same list as Einstien and Mendel plus Jobs and Gates, intellectual pygmies and under-achievers one and all wink While this isn't the same as white smoke creds, and nobody is infallible except perhaps angel it could be worse.

And that, people, is how you use a graph to prove beyond argument that speed limits are worse than Hitler plus Pol Pot multiplied by Stalin and with free bonus Mao. Now you can tell your kids you were here when it happened.

I add that I do not dispute that much speed control is highly debatable, but I think it is just silly to equate it with tyranny, and an insult to people who lived or live under or fought or fight against real tyranny. I suspect that you know that too, but you adopt your conventional contrarian posture. The problem with a conventional contrarian posture is that after a very short while it becomes merely conventional.

BTW, if the presence or absence of a university career is meaningless, as indeed it often is, why try to bolster your argument by mentioning that someone got an entrance award for a degree he didn't finish?
