Bought house - 2 cars left on site - sell them?
Discussion
Bit of a query here for a friend. Bought an old house to do up. 2 cars are left on the site, within the garden boundary. They are not runners but might be useful for bits. There was an agreement the owner would come & remove them by an agreed date. Looks like previous householder isn`t going to come & get them, date is approaching ....
Obviously has no paperwork but wants rid of them - can he dispose of them after the date has passed? Have them removed & bill previous owner?
Unfortunately it`s not a pair of Gullwing Mercs, only old Mondeos

I once bought a flat with a lock up garage, upon inspection of the garage, after moving in, it was full of the previous owners tat. Advice was to make a notice and put it on the garage for, I think 6 weeks, stating that the contents would be disposed of and any costs incurred passed on if not cleared by XXX date.
When that date passed me and a friend skipped the whole lot!
Job done!

Once you've given reasonable notice, sell the cars by whichever means will give best return (within reason) and pass any profit (less your costs in selling them) to the owner.
I would have thought scrap value would make them worth a couple of hundred between them?
This.I would have thought scrap value would make them worth a couple of hundred between them?
Wait until the traditional Xmas slump in scrap prices has passed, phone one of the numerous gentlemen advertising in the local rag (agree a price over the phone, don't haggle when they turn up there will be plenty of competition).
Bingo, should get £250 for a couple of Mondeos I would think

Contact previous owner. Advise them you are charging them storage at X amount per day and if the vehicles are not removed by X date (say 14 days hence) they will be removed. At the 14 day point, send a chaser allowing another 14 days and noting they now owe you Y amount storage fees.
Let me get this right,if i buy a house and the previous person leaves a load of crap behind its my legal duty to put up notices giving six weeks notice to shift it or i will, i have to put up with said crap which could be a small item say a fridge or the complete contents of the loft or the garage, after the six weeks if i sell it i have to give the money to the previous owner, how the hell is the correct?

If the cars don't disappear by the agreed date, your friend needs to check his position with the solicitor that acted for him during the purchase. Then follow their guidance as that's what he's paid his solicitor to do.Forums | Speed, Plod & the Law | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
