Previously announced as "from 2015" then 1.1.2015 - DVLA settled on 8.6.2015.

Amusingly when I get DL's in for ID I reckon it must be 1 in 7 that are still on the old paper job!

Thanks for posting, what a random date! Presume it's related to their new online service being ready.

This.

Give it a few years, they'll slowly and quietly announce merging the photo driving licence with your N.I. number and NHS number.

That's a frightening thought!
"I'm sorry sir, we can't go ahead with your emergency heart operation because you've got an outstanding speeding fine from June!"

I wonder how many cockups will come along the way here? Entitlements getting lost, all and sundry getting access to the data?

Somebody on the 7.30 out of Waterloo will find an open laptop - or memory stick - as per previous episodes of government 'data security'.

Actually I have no issue with having to have your licence with you when driving.

An easy way to introduce photo ID is to have your photograph on credit cards, I know countries where a credit card without the holders photo needs separate photo ID before it is accepted, no bad thing.

The problem with using the DL card as an ID card by stealth is, not everyone has a DL, nor do they need to have a DL.

And as always the problem with ID cards is that the people who'll carry them are not a threat - the people who need to be identified don't carry them or will have fakes - massive flaw.

I would be still on my paper one if I hadn't moved house recently. I resisted changing to a charged-for new licence on principle. It was F.O.C. when I moved, though - astounding!

Already is.

I have no problem with that. The Gov't have _always_ held that information on you, surely it makes _sense_ to consolidate it?

I had kept my old paper license as having not moved address for over 20 years I thought it was unnecessary. Until recently it was pointed out to me that the old paper license was no longer valid in the EU. When my new license arrived I double checked that all my license entitlements were still there. All good.

Yes the only thing currently stopping them withholding life saving treatment to those with outstanding motoring fines is the doctors lacking the facilities to match an nhs number to a drivers license number

Sweeeeet! Hiring a car in the US on the 16/6/15 and have lost my paper counterpart. Just saved myself £25 or whatever the replacement cost is!

I wonder how up to date they will be on the new rules? (Not very I'm guessing. I suppose I should print off the gov web page and bring it with me just in case!)

Last year in Miami the hire company, Alamo, didn't ask for the counterpart, same in Netherlands this year.

Whoever pointed that out to you was wrong.
