I think I've made a bit of cock-up frown

Went to pick up a new (to me) car, sorted insurance etc however couldn't tax as I didn't have the documents on my person however in my haste I attempted to pay online for tax and the new system did not recognise the car using the V5C/2. The previous owner bought the car as stop-gap car and then listed it for sale whilst retaining the V5C/2 as it was now surplus. I then decided to go to a Post Office who then taxed the car and I paid then and there.

It has just occurred to me that the document ID for the V5C/2 I have will be different to the one I actually needed - does the post office tax the car using this ID or the registration number? I'm not convinced.

So presumably when the previous owner gets said V5C I in essence lose the tax and will need to tax again?

These new tax rules are still causing confusion and throwing up anomalies, yours is another one.

I`ve just had a similar problem, went to tax my "new" car online using the V5C/2,it came back "vehicle details not known",apparently I left it to late,"the sale" had gone through the system,a new log book in my name was on its way and stuck in xmas mail.
Filled in a V10 and taxed the car at the Post Office.

Your car IS taxed(for now),the Post Office uses the information on the V10 and I think the V5C/2 is irrelevant to them??

You have a problem though..What happened to the original V5?was it sent to DVLA telling them the car had been sold TO THE GUY YOU BOUGHT IT FROM??I think the problem is you are not the registered keeper?? The guy you bought the car from will get(has now?)a new V5 in HIS name.He will have to"sell it to you again" send the V5 to DVLA with your details on it and retain the V5C/2.The vehicle tax you have just paid for will then be void and you will have to tax the car again loosing a month. You will then get a V5 in your name. Also I think??? the guy you bought the car from will get a month tax refund sent to him????and should pass it on to you!! DVLA will put you right on that one.
Go back to this guy because you could be flagged down either in an untaxed car or a car that is not registered at DVLA in your name.

HAPPY NEW (car) YEAR.

Thanks for posting, I will have to give ring him.

I taxed it for 6 months yesterday, so he will be getting 5 months refunded? As I did not use the V10 form, just the V5C/2 given to me (does the PO read detail from this or does the system just provide tax for the current owner?).

Nice start to the new year frown

Just spoke to DVLA and previous owner, previous owner still has not got the V5C in his name (I think he has been waiting on it for a while - as he seems fairly genuine and he has mentioned it taking its time). The DVLA understand that I have the old V5C/2 (superseded by the missing V5C) - they say I will need send the green slip with a V62 form and they also inform me that the tax will be transferred to me (paid for at the Post Office).

I have to say phone is king with the DVLA (in fact with anyone) as they do seem helpful, wish me luck!

I`m glad that it looks sorted and more importantly the guy you bought it from sounds genuine and is co-operating. By the way the V5 in my name turned up 1st post 29th Dec.

It looks likely that the original owner did not bother to notify DVLA that he sold it to the guy you bought it from.........? or something like that?

The moral is,when you buy a car privately always ensure that the seller has a V5 in HIS name and YOU put your details in the appropriate transfer section and keep the V5C/2.If possible a photo of it all??

I hope these new rules will deter some of the dodgy one man dealers selling cars from home, that were driving around in the ones that still had a tax disc. ?
