I'm looking for some advice on number plate retention and transfer.

I have recently bought a car that comes with a private plate on it. Is there a way of retaining that reg and applying another private plate, without reverting to the original and then applying the new one?

It seems easy enough to retain it, however I don't want to have to amend insurance details twice by changing the details to the original plate, and then the new one a few weeks later. The only way I can think of would mean losing the private reg that is currently on the car, however I think there is potential to sell this reg to a new owner.

Sorry if this is long winded! Hoping someone has a straight forward solution.

Thanks in advance!

The short answer from me is that I don't know......I guess that you might be able to send off a V317 (and fee) to retain the number that's on the car at the moment and in the same envelope include another V317 (and fee) to transfer an existing number onto the new car.

However I've never done this so the above is nothing short of a guess.

I've enquired about registration transfers before with the DVLA, from memory I rang 0300 790 6802 and eventually you can get past the recordings and talk to a person who can give you sound advice - I found them very helpful indeed.

You can retain the existing one and transfer yours on at the same time, just send you fees for both and paperwork for both clearly explaining what you want

Also phone your insurance company if necessary and let them know you may have to change regs twice within a couple of weeks and you don't feel its fair to pay more than one admin fee.

I have done that twice and only been charged once both times with two different company's

Is the plate that came with the car worth retaining?

£105 to put it on retention followed by £25 a year to extend it if it doesn't get allocated to a car.

Many thanks for the feedback! I think best bet is ring DVLA to see what they suggest.

The reg in question in my opinion could be of use to someone - J3 JFN so will try and sell it!
