I ve received my AA membership renewal with the price being cheaper on the internet, but i have noticed they have stated its a continuous membership that requires 30 days cancellation and that they will debt my card on the 12th.
question
i joined over the phone last year and would not agree to a continuous debt so i can shop around ,the conditions came with the renewal notice , were do i stand?

It's likely to have been in the small print when you joined initially.

I had similar, just phone them and tell them you will pay the Internet price or you will walk. They will drop the price.

30 days of cancellation it seems does not apply to renewals. I called up on the day of my most recent renewal to cancel - not realising they had taken the money from my card the day before (I had also had a replacement card in the meantime but they still, somehow, managed to take it from the expired card number..not happy about that either!)
Cancelled and was refunded right away, and then price drops and incentives offered to continue with them - including matching internet price, but still nowhere near competitive.

I was given the usual spiel regarding 'we use our own vans etc etc' but pointed out that the single time I had to use them they sent a local truck instead of one of their own!

Go to autoaid for £41/year instead.

I've just told them to shove it and gone with the rac. They were cheaper and the AA left me stranded when I was really in the st, broken down on the day we were moving house.

As for renewals- don't assume you are being offered a good deal. Always shop round. Our house insurance renewal came in at £310. After a moan it was £210. Going on line with a comparison site the same company came in cheapest at £96 for the same cover!!

They took money off me after I had cancelled all within terms and conditions, just shy of 200 notes. Called them to refund me ASAP and I was told tough. Wait 28 days, cheeky gits even offered to beat the opposition on whatever price I had. Unless they are ludicrously cheaper then I have my large pole handy.

Edit. Meant to say I also stop the direct debits now when I leave any company with such a policy. Annoying thing is I was not signed up for the auto renewal.

You swap your wife for AA membership? A bit harsh isn't it! Why not pay like everyone else. I guess if you do it every year you get her back in odd years!smile

They always try this with my joint membership every year.

Not paid more than £20 for two people the last 4 years.

Just give them a bell.

Have you checked with your insurance? My NFU policy gives me Homestart assistance for about £33 or so IIRC per vehicle.

Still amazes me people renew without shopping around, very rarely will you get the best deal on renewal, I generally switch between RAC and AA, as they both offer personal cover(I have 3 cars, a van and 3 bikes) with no age restrictions. Basically as long as I can get whatever vehicle and passengers home in the event of being unable to repair it is all I need. Always shop around.

They will. And they seem to make up new excuses for the renewal being higher each year so they can go through the charade on the phone before reducing it anyway.

Been doing this for years. Used to take a few minutes but these days you have to listen to a load of piffle about how wonderful they are but stick with "I'll walk then" and they'll eventually cave in and offer the web price or at least close to it. If they don't then tell them to cancel and go with the RAC on their web page deal.

I have experienced this each year with the AA, unless you ring them up and tell them that there is no way you're going to renew at the price quoted for renewal and it's also cheaper too go online as a new customer and get a better deal, they then quoted a much improved price. I actually got 60% off the original renew price, as I had not actually used them in the previous year. Well worth giving them a call.

I've been (most recently) with the RAC for the last 10 years; back in 2004 "rescue, recovery and at home" was something like £141 for the first year - it has reduced steadily with increasing "no claims bonus" and was £73-ish last year (a couple of quid higher than the previous year - now it is called "service pack 5" or something, but it remains ye same olde "rescue, recovery and at home" from what I can see).

I was previously an RAC member (nigh on 20 years ago) and the service was always quick and reliable with positive staff in the '90s - but then I went elsewhere (using "breakdown service" aligned to a bank account - which I never needed - followed by a few years with Green Flag which seemed to be manned by impatient/disgruntled recovery staff when I needed them twice...).

But the RAC have never ever pulled the "exorbitant renewal cost" stunt on me smile .

Firm advertises gadget insurance so I reckon it's not name etc. Try Adrian flux . Fifty odd quid if take with an insurance policy ,else it's sixty odd . That's not breakdown but home start & recovery. With certain insurance firms with different levels of cover, the better one can often have free breakdown ,at a lot less than other breakdown policies.
